On April 18, 2025, Medtronic, a global medical device giant, announced that its next-generation Simplera Sync™ sensor has officially received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This sensor forms a closed-loop management solution with the flagship product MiniMed™ 780G insulin delivery system. This milestone breakthrough marks another step forward in diabetes technology towards "seamlessness" and "intelligence," offering patients a new option for daily blood glucose management.

The Simplera Sync™ sensor, as the latest member of Medtronic's Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) product line, offers three core advantages:

  • Integrated Design:Adopting a "plug-and-play" two-step installation process, no calibration or repeated data entry is required. Paired with SmartGuard™ technology to automatically filter out abnormal values, enhancing monitoring stability.

  • Accurate Prediction Algorithm:When working in conjunction with the MiniMed 780G system, it automatically analyzes blood glucose trends every 5 minutes and dynamically adjusts insulin infusion rates using meal detection functionality. Even if patients miss pre-meal injections or misestimate carbohydrate intake, the system can proactively intervene to reduce blood glucose fluctuations.

  • Personalized Goal Setting:Supports flexible glucose targets as low as 100 mg/dL (close to physiological levels in non-diabetic individuals) and continuously optimizes control strategies through adaptive algorithms. Clinical data shows that, under optimal settings, users' Time in Range (TIR) can be increased to over 70%, far exceeding the international consensus-recommended standard.

With this product, the experience of people with diabetes has been elevated from "passive management" to "active living." The closed-loop design of the MiniMed 780G system has demonstrated significant clinical value:

  • 96% Reduction in Injection Burden: The accompanying pump system supports continuous infusion for 7 days, requiring only one consumable change per week, eliminating the trouble of multiple daily injections.

  • All-Day Intelligent Protection: 24-hour real-time monitoring and automatic adjustment help patients reduce frequent attention to blood glucose levels and improve quality of life.

  • Multi-Sensor Compatibility: Existing users can already pair with the Guardian™4 sensor, and the addition of Simplera Sync further expands the options for personalized monitoring solutions.

Medtronic Diabetes Executive Vice President and President Que Dallara said, "We are committed to driving innovation to make life easier for people with diabetes, so they can forget about their diabetes as much as possible throughout the day." "Our MiniMed™ 780G system provides advanced diabetes technology to many people around the world, and we are excited to continue evolving this experience through expanded CGM options – including our Simplera Sync. We look forward to bringing it to people with diabetes in the United States."

The Simplera Sync sensor is scheduled to launch in limited supply in the United States in fall 2025, forming a new generation of diabetes management solutions together with the MiniMed 780G system.
