On May 21, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday citing sources familiar with the matter, Medtronic plans to spin off its diabetes business into an independent company.

The new company will be led by Que Dallara, head of Medtronic's diabetes division. It is expected to have approximately 8,000 employees, with its headquarters located in Northridge, California. It is reported that the spin-off plan will be completed within 18 months.

In the fiscal year 2024, Medtronic's diabetes business revenue reached $2.488 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.0%, showing certain growth potential. However, the market competition is extremely fierce, with competitors such as DexCom and Abbott continuously launching innovative products, posing a threat to Medtronic's market share.Particularly in the U.S. market, the commercialization process of Medtronic's diabetes-related products has almost come to a standstill., and its performance mainly relies on the international market.

Back in December 2021, Medtronic received a warning letter from the FDA, pointing out product safety issues with its MiniMed 600 series insulin pump. The company had not appropriately classified patient risks nor initiated a recall. This incident significantly impacted Medtronic's diabetes business, resulting in a 3% decline in diabetes business revenue for the fiscal year 2022. Since then, this business has remained a key focus of the company’s operational rectification efforts.

This spin-off is regarded as an important strategic move by Medtronic to optimize its business structure and focus on core areas. Whether the independent diabetes company can reshape its competitive advantages in the market is worth continuous attention.
