Medtronic's Diabetes Business Unit, Which Is About to Be Spun Off, Has a New Name — But It’s One You Already Know, the Company Announced.
According to today's report by Drug Delivery Business News, the medical technology giant has chosen "MiniMed" as the name for this business. Selecting "MiniMed" as the new company name means it does not need to deviate from a widely recognized brand. Nearly 25 years ago, Medtronic acquired a company named MiniMed for $3.7 billion. Currently, Medtronic still sells its insulin pumps, including the latest automated insulin delivery technology products, under the MiniMed system brand.
This medical technology giant announced last month plans to spin off its diabetes business unit. The move aims to create a "more focused Medtronic" with a streamlined product portfolio in high-margin growth markets. At the same time, this spin-off will give rise to an independent, diabetes-focused leader with scale advantages. This new company — initially provisionally named "New Diabetes Company" — aims to accelerate innovation. Its uniqueness lies in having a complete ecosystem capable of addressing issues related to insulin management.
