Transseptal puncture is one of the most commonly used techniques for left atrial interventional procedures, widely applied in surgeries such as atrial fibrillation ablation, left atrial appendage closure, and various mitral valve diseases. It can be said to be "the first door to open left heart interventional surgery." However, transseptal puncture surgeries have long relied on mechanical puncture needles, which present challenges such as difficult puncturing, inaccurate positioning, and even potential cardiac injury due to misplaced punctures or improper force.
To address the difficulty of traditional mechanical puncture needles in puncturing the atrial septum, innovative companies in China and abroad are developing new atrial septal puncture technologies. For instance, Medtronic and Boston Scientific have acquired their desired new atrial septal puncture products through substantial acquisitions. These novel atrial septal puncture products (AcQCross and VersaCross) make the procedure easier, safer, and faster.
CIRCA Scientific, based on its unique understanding of atrial septal puncture, has developed a highly precise, easy-to-operate, and highly efficient atrial septal puncture product—CrossWise. CrossWise has received FDA approval and has begun commercialization in the United States, positioning itself to compete with products from Boston Scientific and Medtronic.

CrossWise
CrossWise is a zero-exchange radiofrequency transseptal puncture product that delivers energy through a specially designed catheter, which is intended to maintain shape and stability during the septal puncture process. This catheter-guided approach allows for precise control and positioning, helping to reduce the risk of unintended movement – even in complex anatomical structures. With sheath flexibility and a streamlined workflow, CrossWise uniquely meets the evolving needs of physicians across a wide range of cases.
Four Major Advantages of CrossWise
Controllability
The visual proximal indicator cannula can identify when the intubation tip extends beyond the dilator, allowing users to control advancement during the trans-septal procedure.
Radiopaque catheters can be clearly visualized under fluoroscopy.
Compatibility
Compatible with common steerable and fixed sheaths, it seamlessly integrates with the doctor's preferred tools and workflows to meet diverse clinical needs.
Safe and Reliable
The inner and outer lumens of the cannula adopt a dielectric coating design, which can safely retain the guidewire throughout the operation while avoiding loss of electrical signals, further enhancing the safety and reliability of the surgery.
Efficient
CrossWise achieves zero exchange in the operation procedure, with three fewer steps than traditional transseptal puncture needles and one fewer step than the newly listed radiofrequency transseptal puncture products.
Therefore, clinical data presented at HRS2025 showed that the CrossWise atrial septal puncture system is highly efficient. CrossWise successfully performs septal punctures in just 290 milliseconds. This rapid puncturing is facilitated by its zero-exchange design, which eliminates the need for guidewire or sheath exchanges.
Executive Evaluation
"The completion of the limited market release has validated the performance and surgical versatility of CrossWise. Physicians have generally reported that this catheter-first design provides enhanced control and precision during septal punctures. With broader sheath compatibility, CrossWise is now poised to support nearly all procedures requiring access to the left side of the heart."
