Isomorphic Labs, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company, is preparing to launch human trials for its AI-designed drugs. Company president Colin Murdoch revealed that the firm, which originated from DeepMind's groundbreaking AlphaFold technology, is combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence with the expertise of seasoned professionals in the pharmaceutical industry to achieve faster, more cost-effective, and more precise drug design.

Murdoch said that after years of research and development,Isomorphic Labs' AI-Assisted Drug Design Enters Human Clinical Trials.The company spun off from DeepMind in 2021 and its core technology is built on one of DeepMind's most famous achievements — the AI system AlphaFold, which can predict protein structures with high accuracy.

AlphaFold's capabilities have continued to evolve, progressing from accurately predicting individual protein structures to being able to simulate how proteins interact with other molecules such as DNA and drugs.These breakthroughs have significantly enhanced its role in drug discovery, enabling researchers to design drugs more quickly and precisely.

In 2024, the same year AlphaFold 3 was released,Isomorphic Labs has signed significant research collaboration agreements with pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Eli Lilly.One year later, in April 2025, Isomorphic Labs raised $600 million in its first external funding round, led by Thrive Capital.

These collaborations and financing efforts are part of Isomorphic Labs' strategy to build a "world-class drug design engine," aiming to combine the expertise of machine learning researchers with seasoned pharmaceutical professionals to design new drugs faster, at lower cost, and with higher success rates.While collaborating with large pharmaceutical companies to support existing R&D projects, Isomorphic Labs is also independently designing drug candidates in fields such as oncology and immunology., with the goal of out-licensing these achievements after completing the early trials.

"We have launched an independent drug research and development project targeting unmet medical needs. Advancing these projects to the human clinical trial stage... Although not yet successful, progress has been good," Murdoch said.

Currently, pharmaceutical companies often need to invest millions of dollars to push a single drug to market, while the success rate at the clinical trial stage is sometimes only about 10%. Murdoch believes that Isomorphic Labs' technology has the potential to fundamentally increase this success rate. "We are committed to achieving all goals: accelerating R&D speed, reducing costs, but most importantly, significantly improving the probability of success," he explained. He hopes that with the help of AlphaFold technology, researchers will in the future have "100% confidence" in the effectiveness of the drugs they develop during human trials.

"We look forward to the day when, in the face of certain diseases, we can simply press a button to generate drug design solutions tailored to specific illnesses,"Murdock predicted, 'All of this will be driven by these powerful AI tools.'"
