The company officials said that the foundation of almost all buildings has been poured, and the steel structure of the first building was installed in July. Throughout August, Johnson & Johnson employees will move into temporary on-site offices, focusing on construction support and production preparation.
"We are proud of the progress at our Wilson facility," said Pete Goodrich, General Manager of Wilson. "Construction is proceeding steadily, and our team continues to grow with top talent, ready to bring this $2 billion facility online. We are not only focused on building the facility but also committed to establishing processes, partnerships, and a workforce that will drive Johnson & Johnson's long-term success in North Carolina."
Johnson & Johnson told The New York Times that currently more than 300 employees are working at the Wilson plant. At the peak of construction, the number of workers is expected to reach 1,500 people per day. Once operational, the plant will collaborate with local service providers, including suppliers of materials, laboratory services, security, logistics, warehousing, food, and equipment services. Officials stated that once the plant is fully operational, the production facility will employ over 500 skilled workers, including process technicians and specialists, laboratory analysts, engineers, and microbiologists.
According to a previous report by The New York Times, the average annual salary for these 500 positions was $110,000.This is more than twice the median household income of $47,294 for Wilson County, as calculated by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Goodrich stated: "This project represents a significant economic investment, expected within the first decade inGenerate an impact of at least $3 billion across the state, and create more than 500 full-time, high-quality jobs, and during the construction period, it will also support thousands of jobs."
Johnson & Johnson stated that recruitment will be carried out in phases over the next few years based on operational needs. Any interested individuals can find job opportunities on the company's website.
Wilson residents first learned of Johnson & Johnson's plans in October of last year. Jennifer Lanz, director of the Wilson Economic Development Council, said at the time that she had been working on the project since 2010.
"This is the largest economic development project ever announced in Wilson," Lanz said when the project was first announced. "It might be comparable to the impact Bridgestone had on Wilson 50 years ago. Its influence will far exceed expectations."
As part of an economic incentive program, the company will receive $49,979,820, to be evenly distributed over 13 years by the city of Wilson and Wilson County. According to a report last year by The New York Times, the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee approved a $29.9 million state-level incentive plan.
