RecentlyDate, Minneapolis——A deal that shook the global medical technology industry has quietly been finalized. ByAmazon founder Bezos, Johnson & Johnson's venture capitalJJDCand K5 Global, among others, formed a consortium to$2.25 billion (approximately RMB 162(Billion Yuan)Completion of Medical Device CompaniesHistoSonicsmajority stake acquisition. This largest private medical device investment of the year has propelled HistoSonics, which originated from the University of Michigan, to become"Medical Unicorn in Central and Western China"

At the same time, Medtronic,GE Healthcare and other giants' strategic acquisition departments could only sigh in regret. According to the Financial Times, the three giants engaged in a fierce bidding war over HistoSonics, with offers reaching up to $2.5 billion, but ultimately lost to this capital alliance led by Bezos.

Disruptive Technology: Non-invasive"The Rise of the 'Sound Wave Scalpel'"

In 2001, whenChinese Female Scientist Zhen XuFirst proposed in the University of Michigan laboratoryNon-invasive Tissue Fragmentation (Histotripsy)At the time of the concept, few people foresaw that this technology would revolutionize cancer treatment. More than two decades later, the company she co-founded, HistoSonics, has delivered an impressive answer.

In October 2023, the Edison system received FDA Breakthrough De Novo approval, becoming the world's first non-invasive sonic platform approved for liver tumor treatment. Its technical principle is revolutionary:High-frequency vibrations generated by focused ultrasound create a "bubble cloud" inside the tumor.

These microbubbles instantly collapse, releasing tremendous mechanical energy to precisely destroy tumor tissue at the subcellular level. The entire processNo surgical incision required, no thermal damage produced, alsoNo radiation required

The 12-month follow-up data published in April 2025 shocked the medical community: In the HOPE4LIVER trial, 95.5% of liver tumors achieved complete ablation, with a one-year local control rate as high as 90%. More encouragingly, critical structures such as blood vessels and bile ducts within the treatment area remained intact – a revolutionary breakthrough for treating tumors located in complex anatomical sites.

Giant Bidding War:$2.5 Billion Technology Grab

In the early summer of 2025, a war without gunfire quietly unfolded among medical giants. As HistoSonics' clinical data continued to astonish the market,Medtronic, GE Healthcare, and Johnson & JohnsonThey have all sent acquisition teams to Minneapolis.

According to the disclosure by the Financial Times,The acquisition offer proposed by the three giants is as high as$2.5 billion, far exceeding the company's valuation after its Series D funding round in 2024.

The biggest highlight of this investment lies in the strategic intent behind the lineup of investors.

Bezos-ownedBezos Expeditions participated in HistoSonics' Series C financing as early as 2019, and this additional investment is regarded as a key part of its medical technology strategy.

Notably, Bezos' investments in the medical field exhibit a "technology-driven" characteristic: Stentrode, the intravascular brain-computer interface developed by Synchron, has entered the critical clinical trial phase, while HistoSonics’ non-invasive tumor treatment technology also targets "disruptive innovation."

Another key player is Johnson & Johnson.Although this time Johnson & Johnson is throughJJDC Participates in Follow-on Investments by Existing Shareholders, Not Strategic Mergers and Acquisitions, but the Financial Times disclosed that Johnson & Johnson hadEngaged in acquisition negotiations with HistoSonics in 2024.

This move is highly relevant to its oncology pipeline: In February 2025, Johnson & Johnson had just received approval in China for two new cancer drugs — amivantamab for lung cancer and talquetamab for multiple myeloma. Industry analysts believe,If Johnson & Johnson successfully acquires HistoSonics, its oncology treatment portfolio will cover both "pharmaceuticals + devices" pathways, forming a closed loop from diagnosis to treatment.

ForFor HistoSonics, choosing private equity over going public or being acquired by a large company highlights its ambition for independent growth. "We need time to validate the long-term value of the technology," said HistoSonics' President and CEO Bruno at an investor communication meeting. "This transaction not only brings in funding but also gains the support of strategic partners in global registration, clinical resources, and commercialization — which is exactly what we need at this stage."

From University Labs to the Global Stage: The Persistence of a Chinese Scientist

Professor Xu Zhen's scientific research journey began at Southeast University in China. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in 2001, she went to the University of Michigan in the United States to further her studies in biomedical engineering, thus embarking on the research path of ultrasound therapy. Today, she is hailed as "Mother of Cancer Ultrasound Therapy" has become a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and IEEE.

In 2009, Xu Zhen and three colleagues from the University of Michigan co-founded HistoSonics, pushing the sonic technology from the lab towards industrialization. The company’s development path was not smooth. In the more than a decade before receiving FDA approval, Johnson & Johnson’s innovation division, JJDC, continuously invested over $150 million, becoming the most steadfast supporter.

Three-pronged Approach:A Strategic Blueprint of $2.25 Billion

Empowered by new capitalHistoSonics, has mapped out a clear expansion roadmap.

In the U.S. domestic market,The Edison system has been deployed in more than 50 top medical centers, including renowned institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, with a cumulative total of over 2,000 patients treated. The company plans to complete the installation of an additional 50 devices by the end of 2025.

In terms of expanding indications, after liver tumors, the kidneys and pancreas have become the next battleground.HOPE4KIDNEY Trial (NCT05820087) and GANNON Pancreatic Cancer Trial (NCT06282809) Have Fully Launched. Long-term plans for prostate cancer and benign tumor treatments are also underway.

Global Layout Accelerates Simultaneously. In April 2025, Addenbrooke's Hospital at the University of Cambridge installed the first Edison system in Europe, funded by the Li Ka Shing Foundation UK, to serve NHS patients. In the Asian market, Hong Kong's medical centersAlsoHas begun clinical application.

"Now is the time to scale up," said Brü after the deal was announced. "We have spent years validating the core technology and accumulating clinical evidence. This investment allows us to accelerate with scale, focus, and urgency."

Breakthrough in Medical Insurance: A Key Milestone in Commercial Promotion

The popularization of any medical technology is inseparable from the recognition of the medical insurance system. In 2025, HistoSonics achieved a key breakthrough in this field.

On February 1, the U.S. healthcare system established a dedicated CPT code (0686T) for tissue acoustic wave therapy technology, paving the way for reimbursement.

Greater Breakthroughs inMay has arrived. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield announces insurance coverage expansion in four states including New York and Pennsylvania, benefiting 7 million insured individuals. This decision is based on solid clinical evidence: among all treated tumor types, the 12-month local control rate reached 90%, surpassing existing therapies.

Analysts generally believe that once the medical insurance policy is replicated in other states, its commercial potential will increase exponentially. This demonstrates the high level of confidence from the capital market in non-invasive ablation technology, and future growth is expected. The global market size is expected to exceed 5 billion US dollars in 5 years.

Platform Ambition: Technological Expansion Beyond Cancer Treatment

Different from other competing products,The Edison system has demonstrated the potential of a platform technology.

Compared with traditional thermal ablation (radiofrequency, microwave), its non-thermal mechanical destruction mechanism avoids the risk of tissue carbonization, making it particularly suitable for complex anatomical areas that are difficult for surgery to reach, such as the deep liver, renal hilum area, and pancreatic tail. This characteristic gives it a unique advantage in the field of pediatric tumor treatment.

A broader range of application prospects is unfolding. In addition to malignant tumors, benign tumors and functional diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia have also becomeHistoSonics' R&D Direction. The company is also developing a new generation of ultrasound generators and positioning systems to further enhance treatment precision.

"The highlight of HistoSonics is not only the technology itself, but also the speed at which the team translates breakthroughs into clinical reality," pointed out Bryan Baum, co-founder of K5 Global. "They are at the gateway to the next technological revolution in healthcare."

FromThe Rise of HistoSonics and the Capital Race, to the Major Players' Heavy Deployment in Medical Innovation Technology, It Is Not Difficult to See That the Medical Device Track Is Welcoming Unprecedented Capital Heat and Development Opportunities. Behind Every Disruptive Technology Landing and Every Cross-Regional Market Expansion, There Is No Lack of Precise Capital Connection and Professional Strategic Support.
