Research published in "PNAS" by Hongzhong Lu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Yongjin Zhou from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences constructed a high-quality pan-genome by integrating genomic resources of 1,807 strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and established strain-specific genome-scale metabolic models (ssGEMs).
The study found that transcriptional regulation of metabolic flux is widely present in specific metabolic pathways at the population level. By integrating pan-genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolic flux data, significant metabolic differences were revealed among Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains in different ecological niches (such as the human gut and cheese environments), along with evidence of convergent metabolic evolution. These findings systematically illustrate how yeast adapts to specific ecological niches through genomic and metabolic reprogramming, providing computational resources for future conversion of yeast genotypes into fitness. This research not only enhances the understanding of the adaptive mechanisms of Saccharomyces cerevisiae but also offers important insights for synthetic biology and systems biology studies.
