On September 26, at the fourth Global Digital Trade Expo (hereinafter referred to as "Digital Trade Expo"), an international stage gathering global new product launches and premier exhibitions, medical technology giant Medtronic appeared again, bringing its newly approved fourth-generation Pipeline™ Vantage with Shield Technology™ surface-modified flow-diverting stent (hereinafter referred to as "Pipeline™ Vantage"). This is also the first public display of the product after its approval.
Flow Diverter Stent: An Innovative Interventional Therapy for Treating Cerebral Aneurysms. A cerebral aneurysm is not a tumor, but rather an abnormal bulge formed in the local wall of a cerebral artery, akin to a "vascular pouch" or an unpredictable "time bomb" within the skull, which, if ruptured, can lead to cerebral hemorrhage with high mortality and disability rates.
Medtronic is the pioneer of flow diversion therapy. This treatment involves implanting a dense mesh stent to redirect blood flow within cerebral vessels, gradually closing aneurysms to achieve therapeutic goals. A Medtronic spokesperson explained using a vivid analogy: "If we compare blood vessels to 'roads,' traditional embolization therapy is like filling 'potholes' on the road surface — wherever there's a 'hole,' it gets filled, which is a temporary fix. The core of flow diversion therapy, however, is to change the direction of blood flow, equivalent to 'paving' within the vessel, addressing the root cause."
Compared with traditional solutions, this innovative "reconstructing blood flow" technology has simplified the treatment of intracranial aneurysms and provided a new option for patients with cerebral aneurysms.
Blood Flow Diversion Therapy Animation Demonstration
It is reported that Medtronic's blood flow diversion therapy has been introduced to the Chinese market for a decade. To date, more than 250,000 patients worldwide and over 40,000 patients with cerebral aneurysms in China have benefited from this therapy. As the most extensively researched blood flow diverter stent globally, there are already over a thousand research papers on this therapy, with patient follow-up exceeding ten years. These achievements not only bring new hope to patients with aneurysms difficult to treat by traditional methods but also further confirm the widespread clinical recognition of blood flow diversion therapy.
The core breakthrough of the Pipeline™ Vantage stent, which is being exhibited for the first time, lies in coating the surface of the stent’s mesh—thinner than a hair strand—with phosphorylcholine polymer. This biomaterial, a component of human red blood cells, acts like an "invisible cloak" for the stent, allowing it to be implanted into cerebral blood vessels affected by aneurysms without being recognized as a "foreign object" and attacked by the body, thereby reducing thrombosis and lowering complication rates. Additionally, the new-generation product can be delivered using even thinner microcatheters, akin to being equipped with more flexible "tools," enabling smooth passage through blood vessels as narrow as 2 millimeters in diameter, further enhancing the accessibility of this innovative therapy.
In addition to product innovation, Medtronic is also actively promoting the digital ecosystem construction of flow diversion therapy in China, allowing innovative therapies to benefit more aneurysm patients. Through its digital therapy promotion program, combined with AIDigital HumanIntroduction, promotion of online therapies to enhance concepts, virtual simulators for zero-risk refinement of operational skills, help doctors shorten the learning curve, enable innovative therapies to truly enter clinical practice, and promote the development of flow diversion therapy in China. "We hope to use the Digital Trade Expo as a platform to deepen exchanges with the government, research institutions, and local partners, and jointly advance the digitalization and localization of China’s neurointervention field," said a relevant Medtronic official.
Medtronic Continues to Leverage the Digital Trade Expo as a Bridge, Introducing World-Leading Medical Technologies into the Chinese Market and Promoting the Localization and Development of Innovative Therapies. The Launch of Pipeline™ Vantage Not Only Marks a New Phase in the Treatment of Brain Aneurysms That Is Less Invasive and Safer, But Also Provides Chinese Patients with More Diverse and High-Quality Treatment Options, Supporting the Realization of the "Healthy China" Vision.
