Deep Dive: AI That 'Reads' Genes From a Single Slide

On October 10, 2026, a team led by Zhong Nanshan—the renowned Chinese respiratory specialist—jointly with KingMed Diagnostics Group Co., Ltd. (NYSE: 603882), unveiled DeepGEM 2.0, a multimodal large language model designed to predict lung cancer-related gene mutations directly from routine digital pathology slides.

The model, developed with the National Respiratory Medicine Center at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, requires no additional tissue sampling. It analyzes standard hematoxylin-and-eosin (H&E) stained slides and outputs predictions on gene mutation probability and spatial distribution within the tissue—results delivered in as little as one minute.

Version 2.0 represents a significant upgrade. Trained on nearly 8,000 digital pathology slides collected from 31 provinces across China, the model now predicts 12 lung cancer-related genes—double the six covered in its predecessor. The newly added targets include BRAF, ERBB2, FGFR, MET, NTRK, and RET.

A multi-center, prospective, randomized controlled study has been launched, planning to enroll nearly 1,000 non-small cell lung cancer patients predicted positive by DeepGEM 2.0 across 50 medical institutions. The model will also be deployed in lightweight form to more than 500 healthcare facilities. According to the development team, the "AI initial screening plus targeted gene verification" approach could reduce lung cancer genetic testing costs to the range of several hundred Chinese yuan (roughly $50–$100 USD).

Policy Watch: EU Tightens Oversight on High-Risk IVDs

Coinciding with the European Day of Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation on October 10, the EU Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) announced progress on the EU4Health-funded EURL-IVD.3 project, themed "Safe testing for safer donations."

The project targets Class D high-risk in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products under the In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (IVDR) (EU) 2017/744. These include tests used to detect infectious disease pathogens and assess the safety of donated blood, organs, tissues, and cells.

Under the new framework, notified bodies must now request independent verification from EU Reference Laboratories (EURLs) for designated Class D IVDs. The EURLs will verify device performance claims made by manufacturers and conduct batch testing to ensure consistent quality across production lots. This requirement extends the work initiated under EURL-IVD.1 and EURL-IVD.2.

For manufacturers exporting transfusion screening and infectious disease testing products to Europe, EURL verification and batch testing must now be factored into CE marking registration timelines and budgets.

Industry: World's First Retinal Hole Sealing Gel Approved in China

Haohai Biotech (688366.SH), through its subsidiary Qisheng Bio, has developed the world's first approved retinal hole sealing gel, branded "Shiyouning" (intraocular cross-linked sodium hyaluronate gel). The product received Class III medical device registration from China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in March 2026.

The first batch of surgeries using the new gel was performed at Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital. Clinical trials were conducted across eight ophthalmology centers in China, enrolling 326 patients.

Traditional rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery requires intraocular filling with gas or silicone oil to press the retinal hole closed, forcing patients to maintain a prone position for extended periods post-surgery. Those with silicone oil fillings often require a second surgery for removal. The new gel provides precise local sealing at the retinal hole, enabling faster visual recovery without the need for prone positioning.

AI & Devices: FDA Clears AI Tool for Autism Screening in Children

On October 8, Argus Cognitive announced that its Neurora platform has received FDA 510(k) clearance (Reference Number: K260064) for AI-assisted diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children aged 18 months to 12 years.

The product is designed to assist clinicians in evaluating children for ASD, with the goal of shortening the wait time between when parents first notice developmental concerns and when a formal diagnosis is obtained. Current autism diagnosis relies heavily on specialist observation of behavior and standardized assessment scales—processes that are subjective and constrained by limited specialist availability.

By introducing objective, AI-driven screening, the tool aims to enable primary care settings to conduct initial assessments, rather than replacing physician diagnosis. Regulatory scrutiny for pediatric and behavioral health AI remains high, with particular attention to appropriate patient populations, data bias, and clinical validation study design.

Editor's Note: The Next Phase of Medical AI—Evidence Over Parameters

The launch approach of DeepGEM 2.0 is noteworthy: rather than leading with model size or parameter counts, the team immediately outlined a "50-hospital, nearly 1,000-patient prospective randomized controlled study" roadmap. Medical AI has reached a point where parameters and benchmark rankings carry diminishing appeal. What truly determines hospital adoption comes down to two things: multi-center, prospective clinical evidence, and the ability to secure regulatory clearance and integrate into clinical pathways.

KingMed Diagnostics holds vast national pathology slide collections and testing networks; the Zhong Nanshan team provides clinical credibility. This combination of "data plus clinical validation" may prove more effective for medical AI deployment than pure algorithmic superiority.
