Shares of Guangdong Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. surged more than 9% during intraday trading on October 9, as the company announced that its weight-loss drug candidate has reached a critical milestone in late-stage clinical development.
As of the time of writing, the stock was up 6.69% at 24.72 yuan (approximately $3.40), with trading volume reaching 910 million yuan ($125 million). The rally followed the company's announcement that RAY1225 injection, a Class 1 innovative drug, has received top-line analysis data from its Phase III clinical trial for weight management.
The top-line data represents a significant de-risking event for Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical's pipeline, as Phase III results are typically the final hurdle before regulatory submission. While the company has not yet disclosed the specific efficacy and safety metrics, the completion of top-line analysis signals that the weight-loss injection is advancing toward potential commercialization in China's rapidly expanding obesity treatment market.
Great Wall Securities recently issued a note on the broader traditional Chinese medicine sector, projecting that the industry will experience simultaneous revenue and profit growth starting in the third quarter of 2026. The brokerage noted that while first-half revenues faced pressure, cost optimization efforts have allowed adjusted net profit growth to outpace revenue performance. Channel destocking completion, increased flu-related demand, and declining herbal medicine prices are expected to drive gross margin recovery.
The sector's current valuation and institutional positioning remain at historical lows, according to the brokerage. Policy catalysts including the new national essential drug catalog, registration reform regulations, and the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan could provide further upside triggers for pharmaceutical stocks.
Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical, which engages in pharmaceutical research, development, manufacturing, and commercialization, reported mixed financial results for the first half of 2026. The company posted total operating revenue of 1 billion yuan ($137 million), down 23.0% year-over-year, while net profit attributable to shareholders fell 40.7% to 111 million yuan ($15.2 million).
Second-quarter performance showed steeper declines, with revenue dropping 43.5% to 376 million yuan ($51.6 million) and net profit plunging 89.0% to 11.6 million yuan ($1.6 million). The weakness reflects broader industry headwinds including pricing pressures and inventory adjustments, though the stock's sharp rally suggests investors are looking past near-term challenges in favor of the company's pipeline potential.
The weight-loss drug market has become increasingly competitive globally, with multiple players racing to capture share in a therapeutic area projected to generate tens of billions in annual sales. Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical's RAY1225 injection enters this landscape as a domestic contender, and successful Phase III results could position the company as a meaningful participant in China's obesity treatment ecosystem.
