Recently, innovative biopharmaceutical company Synphatec announced the completion of its Series A financing round, raising over $50 million. The round was led by Decheng Capital, with participation from Huatai GenScript Fund and China Merchants Venture. Existing shareholders Morningside Ventures, Shunwei Capital, and Qianju Capital continued to provide additional support. CEC CAPITAL served as the exclusive financial advisor for this financing round.
The funds from this round will be primarily used to advance the clinical development of core pipeline candidates SP-101 and SP-201, optimize the i-NaS and SynX dual technology platforms, and continuously expand the innovative pipeline portfolio around significant unmet clinical needs.
Synphatec, founded in 2021 and headquartered in Shanghai, China, is dedicated to developing next-generation therapies for central nervous system (CNS) diseases by leveraging innovative biological discovery capabilities and extensive drug development expertise. The company aims to address urgent clinical needs in the treatment of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
Both of the company’s core pipelines are poised to enter proof-of-concept (POC) clinical studies. The lead candidate, SP-101, is a rapid-acting antidepressant targeting NMDA receptors. Its safety has been preliminarily validated in Phase I clinical trials, demonstrating a significantly wider safety margin compared to Spravato. This pipeline is scheduled to initiate Phase Ib/IIa clinical studies within the year. SP-201 is an innovative gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease that inhibits Aβ (beta-amyloid) production at its source and is expected to commence investigator-initiated trials (IIT) in the near future. Both core pipelines have demonstrated best-in-disease therapeutic potential.
Dr. Geng Yang, Co-founder and CEO of Synphatec, stated: “We sincerely thank both new and existing investors for their trust and support in the Synphatec team. Synphatec will continue to adhere to its biology-driven innovation strategy, leveraging its industrial resources and execution efficiency to rapidly build a differentiated pipeline. Meanwhile, maintaining an open mindset, we will actively engage in communication and collaboration with global partners, striving to bring safer and more effective treatment options to patients worldwide at the earliest possible date.”
Decheng Capital stated: “The Synphatec team possesses a solid biological foundation in the CNS field, along with the execution capability to translate mechanistic research into clinical assets. It has built a differentiated pipeline portfolio focused on major disease areas with significant unmet clinical needs, such as depression and Alzheimer’s disease. We look forward to Synphatec accelerating the clinical development and proof-of-concept (POC) validation of its core pipelines over the next 1–2 years, thereby bringing clinically valuable innovative therapies to global patients at an earlier stage. Decheng Capital will leverage its global industrial resources to support the company’s overseas collaborations and long-term development.”
Huatai GenScript Fund stated: “Synphatec is dedicated to addressing unmet clinical needs in mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases through source innovation. We highly recognize the team’s capabilities in foundational research, technological accumulation, and clear clinical development strategies in the field of innovative CNS drugs, and we believe the company can provide new solutions for CNS diseases. Following the completion of this round of financing, we will continue to provide comprehensive support in resource integration, clinical development, and capital operations, helping Synphatec accelerate towards its next milestone.”
China Merchants Venture stated: “CNS innovative drugs are one of the key sectors we have long focused on, and a priority area for strategic deployment by China Merchants Group’s industrial companies. The Synphatec team boasts over 20 years of experience in both basic research and commercialization within the CNS field. Leveraging a profound understanding of disease mechanisms, they have built a differentiated pipeline targeting several major CNS disorders. Interim data from their lead asset, SP-101—a next-generation rapid-acting antidepressant—has met expectations, laying a solid foundation for subsequent clinical development. We look forward to seeing more of Synphatec’s innovative products enter clinical trials and achieve critical milestones in their later-stage development. China Merchants Venture will continue to support the company’s business growth, helping bring innovative therapies to patients sooner and transforming clinical value into social impact.”
Dr. Liao Jieying, Partner at CEC CAPITAL, stated: “The CNS sector is the most promising area for innovative drug development, following oncology and autoimmune diseases. Source innovation is key to overcoming the high failure rate in this field. Synphatec has become a globally representative CNS innovator, leveraging its internationally leading mechanism discovery capabilities and robust clinical data. We are pleased to serve as the exclusive financial advisor for this round of financing and look forward to continuing our partnership with the company to achieve more milestones.”
