History and Introduction of Wax Therapy

Wax therapy has a long history.

Compendium of Materia Medica once recorded: "Use two catties of wax, melt it in a container, shape it into a helmet that fits the size of the head, and place it on the forehead. The illness will be immediately relieved."It has remarkable effects on tetanus rheumatism, wind chill, and chilblains on the feet...

Wax therapy is an excellent conductive heat treatment, which features good plasticity, viscosity, and ductility. It can closely adhere to the skin and stretch or deform freely to fit various parts of the body surface. With a long heat retention time, it enables human tissues to be exposed to high and sustained thermal effects. On the one hand, it can improve blood circulation, dilate local skin capillaries, and promote the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid.; on the other handCan promote the absorption of tissue edema and the elimination of pain-causing substances, achieving the purpose of reducing swelling and relieving pain by absorbing inflammatory infiltration.

The Clinical Value of Wax Therapy

Core Rehabilitation Equipment for Burn Department[1]

Case: A Study of 106 Cases at Beijing Dawang Road Emergency Rescue Hospital

Methods: A total of 106 hand burn patients who underwent skin grafting surgery at the hospital from May 2019 to April 2022 were selected. The surgical treatment protocols were consistent across all cases. Patients were divided into an experimental group (n=57) and a control group (n=49) based on their rehabilitation treatment plans. Both groups were given conventional treatment, and the experimental group was additionally treated with paraffin therapy on this basis.Compare the rehabilitation treatment effects of the two groups.

Results:After treatment, the VAS and VSS scores of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05); after treatment, the physical functioning, physical role, bodily pain, vitality, and mental health scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05).

Conclusion: The addition of wax therapy in the rehabilitation treatment of patients undergoing skin grafting for hand burns can better alleviate localized pain and restore hand function.

Good News for Patients with Neck, Shoulder, Waist, and Leg Pain[2]

Case: Research on 160 Patients with Periarthritis at Xi'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital

Method: A total of 160 patients with periarthritis who were treated in the hospital from March 2020 to March 2022 were selected as the research subjects and were divided into a control group (n=80) and an observation group (n=80) according to the random number table method. The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the observation group was given additional intervention with paraffin therapy combined with traditional Chinese medicine fomentation.Compare the pain relief, shoulder joint function recovery, and quality of life between the two groups.

Results: At 7 days of intervention and at the end of the intervention, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). After the intervention, the scores of each dimension and the total score of the Constant-Murley Shoulder Score Scale in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05).

Conclusion: Wax therapy combined with traditional Chinese medicine sealing pack intervention can alleviate pain symptoms in patients with periarthritis, improve shoulder joint function, and enhance quality of life, demonstrating clinical promotion value.

A Powerful Tool for Bone and Joint Pain Rehabilitation[3]

Case: A Study on 84 Patients with Rheumatic Cold Arthralgia at Gansu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Methods: 84 patients with rheumatic cold arthralgia were divided into a treatment group of 44 cases and a control group of 40 cases. The control group was treated with conventional methods, while the treatment group received additional wax therapy on top of the control group's treatment., with 7 days as one course of treatment, the efficacy of the two groups was compared after 3 courses of treatment.

Results: The total recovery rate was 93.18% in the treatment group and 80% in the control group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01).

Conclusion: Paraffin therapy using the Sunnyou paraffin therapy instrument is more effective than conventional methods for treating arthralgia caused by wind, cold, and dampness. It is simple and easy to implement, making it suitable for widespread application.

The Professional Choice for Abnormal Spasms[4]

Case: A Study on 70 Patients with Post-Stroke Limb Spasticity at the Zigong Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Sichuan Province

Method: Seventy stroke patients with limb spasticity were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, with 35 cases in each group. The control group received routine electroacupuncture, low-frequency pulse treatment, and rehabilitation care, while the observation group was additionally treated with traditional Chinese medicine paraffin therapy on top of the routine treatment and care. The modified Ashworth Spasticity Scale (MAS) was used to evaluate the effects on the two groups of patients before treatment, after one course of treatment, and after two courses of treatment.

Results: After 1 and 2 courses of treatment, the MAS scores in the observation group significantly improved compared to the control group (P<0.05).

Conclusion: External application of traditional Chinese medicine wax therapy has a significant spasmolytic effect in treating limb spasticity after stroke.
