Today's protagonist: Illumina.
October 1, 2025Illumina, the leading company in the sequencing industry, announces the establishment of a new business unit: BioInsight. From our perspective, this is a brand-new milestone for Illumina in terms of internal structural integration and even full adoption of AI.A direct look at its business direction reveals that BioInsight divides its business areas into four parts, but in fact, there are only three.First,"General contracting" of national large-scale projects, which may include resource coordination, tool development, etc., both internally and externally for the entire project;Second,Build a data sharing platform, which will include the content of the first part of the business, and is highly likely to integrate multiple large projects. Illumina can provide infrastructure, or package it as a service business.Third,Develop AI tools for strategic partners and multi-omics analysis. The new business unit will be led by Rami Mehio, Meta's global head of software and information technology, who previously worked at Edico Genome (the early driving force behind DRAGEN).Interestingly, he worked at Nokia for three years early in his career, where he was also engaged in software-related work. This architectural adjustment also transferred Rami Mehio's position to the GM of BioInsight. In fact, this is also very likely to be a reasonable shift made by Illumina's management after reviewing their own business capabilities and competitive situation.Illumina no longer holds a dominant position in terms of product performance and cost. China's MGI Tech, GenoCare, and Sailu have long surpassed it.Even at the innovation level, Element looks at Illumina with a hint of disdain. So, what is Illumina's current core advantage? It is a relatively comprehensive solution system; It is the impression that has long been left in people's minds. Therefore, BioInsight aims to leverage these advantages and integrate internal resources to focus on capturing major national-level projects. We believe that BioInsight may focus on the following directions next:First,National Biobank Project;Large sample banks similar to UKB offer sequencing, proteomics, and single-cell projects, and Illumina can provide all of these except for long-read sequencing. The only one that can compete with it is MGI Tech. As long as they add a proteomics component, but... MGI Tech is China's.Second,Large Pharmaceutical Company Collaboration Project. It goes without saying, such as the previous Alliance for Genomics Discovery (AGD) project.Third,Various foundation projects. For example, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI)'s "Billion Single-Cell Program," etc. These projects, without exception, require strong product power, technical integration capabilities, and networking relationships. Moreover, these projects are all typical cases of "three years without business, and one opening will feed you for three years," which fits perfectly with Illumina's current stage of development. So, how will MGI Tech and others respond?---The End---
