Medtronic Cardiac Surgery announced the launch of its extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system, the VitalFlow™ System, in Europe on October 7., This is a configurable all-in-one ECMO solution based on simplicity and performance.
VitalFlow™ ECMO System bridges the gap between bedside care and intra-hospital transport, providing doctors and clinicians with a simple and fully integrated ECMO portfolio specifically designed to meet the complex and ever-changing demands of modern intensive care units.
Medtronic's cardiac surgery team will launch the VitalFlow system at the 39th European conference.

The annual meeting of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from October 8 to 11.
The VitalFlow System Technology, first launched in the United States in September 2024, represents the most innovative advancement from Medtronic following its acquisition of MC3 Cardiopulmonary (a deal completed in March 2024). This acquisition marks the successful conclusion of an eight-year partnership and distribution agreement with Medtronic’s cardiac surgery division, which has resulted in the launch of seven new ECMO products over the past seven years.
"The VitalFlow ECMO system is not just a system—it represents a step forward in advancing the application of ECMO across Europe, supporting healthcare teams in providing care for critically ill patients, and promoting the improvement of patient care," said Giuseppe Savora, Senior Business Director for Western Europe of Medtronic's Cardiac Surgery division within the Cardiovascular Portfolio.
"Medtronic offers the most comprehensive portfolio of cardiac surgery products available today. This launch underscores Medtronic's commitment to advancing life-restoring medical technologies that address acute cardiopulmonary needs, reaffirming our dedication to this critical area."
VitalFlow System Brings Critical Solutions to ECMO
The user-friendly VitalFlow system features a large, intuitive touchscreen that centrally displays real-time performance data, offers configurability, and is designed for acute cardiopulmonary needs and long-term performance, incorporating the previously introduced Medtronic Nautilus™ ECMO oxygenator design.
"We collected feedback from hundreds of clinicians with different ECMO expertise and were able to design the VitalFlow system to address the most pressing unmet needs in ECMO systems: simplicity, configurability, and performance," said Savoj. "The simplicity of the VitalFlow system enables clinicians to confidently and efficiently serve patients."
It is portable and easy to use between various departments in the hospital, and its design emphasizes durability and performance.
Medtronic's Cardiac Surgery Team recently launched ECMObile—a mobile simulation and education unit designed to provide immersive, hands-on ECMO training. Over the next 12 months, it will travel across Europe, facilitating direct interaction with healthcare professionals and imparting best practices in ECMO management.
"As patient complexity increases, the needs of clinicians in the ECMO field are also constantly evolving," said Dr. Pete Capettini, Chief Medical Officer of Cardiac Surgery at Medtronic. "This drives the demand for innovative solutions across multiple disease areas, and Medtronic is well-prepared to meet these needs by advancing treatment options that better support patients."
