According to Investing.com, Roche announced at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) conference that its technology based on Sequencing by Expansion (SBX)The high-throughput sequencer "AXELIOS" is priced at $750,000 (approximately 5.3 million RMB)., but did not disclose the pricing of the consumables.

The price of the instrument and Illumina's highest throughputNovaSeq X ApproachingThe $1 million equipment price is quite comparable. Although Roche instruments are generally more expensive, it is somewhat surprising that the first sequencer for clinical applications directly rivals the NovaSeq X.

The market had widely expected that Roche would likely seize a portion of the high-throughput sequencing market share from Illumina with AXELIOS.But the key to competition still depends on whether the pricing of consumables can match Illumina's level of about $2 per G.

Guggenheim upgraded Illumina to "Buy" with a $114.00 price target based on the instrument's price, representing a 23% increase from its current share price of $92.56.

At the same time, at the ASHG conference, Roche Sequencing Solutions, in collaboration with Broad Clinical Labs and the team from Boston Children's Hospital, successfully set a new world record for DNA sequencing. The sequencing of a human whole genome was completed in less than 4 hours, breaking the previous record of 5 hours and 2 minutes. This achievement has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and officially certified by Guinness World Records as the "Fastest DNA Sequencing Technology."

At the same time, Illumina is also actively promoting innovation.Recently, launched5-Base Sequencing Solutions, capable of simultaneously detecting genomic variations and DNA methylation information from a single sample, covering the whole genome or targeted regions. Its Stellation technology has also demonstrated potential in identifying complex variants in GeneDx's rare disease research. Additionally, Illumina has established a new business unit.BioInsight, led by former executive Rami Mehio, focuses on the development of life science data assets and AI analytics solutions.

With Roche's entry and current strategy, it marks that the competition in the high-throughput sequencing market is entering a new phase.

From a technical perspective,Ultra-fast whole genome sequencing will first unleash its potential in high-value clinical scenarios such as critical care and rare disease diagnosis.

From a business perspective,The competitive landscape between Roche and Illumina will largely depend on the pricing of consumables and the perfection of the supporting ecosystem.

Roche stated that more information related to AXELIOS will be released during the ASHG conference and throughout the remainder of 2025, but did not disclose a specific timeline for its launch.

In the coming year, we may witness the NGS industry's all-around competition in multiple dimensions: "Speed - Cost - Multi-omics - AI."
