Thermo Fisher Scientific recently launched the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX mass spectrometer – the industry's first high-resolution accurate-mass Orbitrap system specifically designed for environmental and food safety laboratories. The system is aimed at addressing the increasingly severe challenges of food and water quality testing worldwide, particularly targeting persistent pollutants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, pesticides, and other contaminants. With workflows optimized for environmental and food testing, as well as one of the most powerful targeted analysis technologies in the industry, laboratories can use the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX (Environmental and Food Organic Xenobiotics) to generate high-quality compliance data more quickly, thereby assessing public health risks at an earlier stage.

Unlike traditional high-resolution mass spectrometry systems, the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX is not a research platform adapted for routine testing but a research-grade high-performance system specifically designed for everyday analytical work. It brings Orbitrap technology, originally used for deep proteomics and small molecule analysis, into routine laboratories, enabling them to detect ultra-low levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with the same confidence and precision. The system is easy to operate and quick to install, allowing laboratories to obtain results from samples within minutes while ensuring that data quality and throughput remain uncompromised.

Lidija Raicevic, Vice President of Thermo Fisher Scientific and Head of Environmental and Food Safety, stated: "Against the backdrop of tight budgets and stringent regulatory requirements, environmental and food safety laboratories are under immense pressure to accelerate testing speed and improve result accuracy. The Orbitrap Exploris EFOX significantly reduces the burden of detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, and other contaminants. By providing an easy-to-operate high-resolution mass spectrometry platform, it enables more laboratories to conduct critical full-scan accurate-mass high-resolution monitoring, achieve localized testing in more key areas, expedite quality control processes, and enhance the safety of our environment and food."

Orbitrap Exploris EFOX Sets New Standards for Environmental and Food Safety Testing. The system captures full-scan high-resolution data from each sample, enabling comprehensive data recording and retrospective analysis. Laboratories can perform trace analysis on newly discovered compounds without re-injection, saving time and proactively responding to evolving regulatory requirements. Additionally, the system’s built-in workflows for detecting major environmental pollutants help laboratories achieve compliance faster, saving months of method development time and reducing operational costs.

The system seamlessly integrates with Chromeleon Chromatography Data System, providing a guided and intuitive operating interface that simplifies data processing and reporting workflows, reduces training needs, shortens review cycles, and accelerates the delivery of critical health and safety insights. When used in conjunction with the Vanquish Dual-Channel UHPLC system, it demonstrates robust and reliable performance, instilling confidence, flexibility, and productivity into the overall solution.

In addition to the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX, Thermo Fisher Scientific will continue to support the triple quadrupole detection workflow with the launch of the Thermo Scientific TSQ Altis Plus EFOX mass spectrometer — a specialized version of the TSQ Altis Plus mass spectrometer optimized for environmental and food analysis.
