The High Prevalence of Myopia Has Become a Serious Social Issue.

Data show that the number of people with myopia in China has exceeded 450 million, meaning nearly one in three individuals is nearsighted. The issue of myopia among adolescents is particularly severe, with prevalence rates among high school and college students both exceeding 70%, while the rate among primary school students approaches 40%.

How to effectively prevent and control myopia and protect the vision of adolescents is a major issue that urgently needs to be addressed.

To this end, the Guangdong Wild Light Source Vision Health Research Institute and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University have jointly launched a vision training lamp.Domestic and internationalThe first reading and writing eye-care desk lamp to obtain a Class II medical device registration certificate, which conducts eye function training by dynamically adjusting lighting through intelligent control.

How Can a Desk Lamp Help Prevent Myopia?

Multiple studies have found that outdoor activities can effectively curb the development of myopia; people who spend more time outdoors are less likely to develop nearsightedness. The primary reason for this lies in the moving light sources present in natural light.

A research team at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University discovered in animal experiments that, compared with static indoor lighting, outdoor natural light exhibits dynamic variations. These dynamic changes in light can cause the pupil to dilate and constrict, and enable the ciliary muscle to tense and relax. In other words, theoretically, dynamic light can regulate and train visual function.

The Wild Light Source Vision Training Lamp leverages this principle by using artificial intelligence technology to continuously vary light brightness, color temperature, and projection angle, thereby simulating outdoor natural light to create a dynamic light source that promotes eye health.

While providing illumination, the training lamp projects dynamic light waves that induce involuntary eye movements during work and study. This stimulates coordinated movement of the ciliary muscles and crystalline lens, thereby maintaining the flexibility of the ocular accommodative system and helping to prevent and control the onset and progression of myopia and presbyopia.

The operation is also very simple: users can adjust the brightness and color temperature of the light via the companion app, select from seven eye-care modes tailored to different age groups, or enable a DIY eye-care mode according to their individual needs.

Chen Ziping, founder of Wild Light Source, told VCBeat: “We have developed numerous programs tailored to the personalized needs of users across different ages, occupations, genders, and work environments, ensuring more appropriate and healthier care for their eyes. For users with lower accommodative ability or heightened light sensitivity, we avoid rapid training paces; instead, we allow their eyes to gradually adapt, thereby improving visual acuity.”

The successful development of the Wild Light Source Vision Training Lamp marks a new approach to myopia prevention and control. It leverages everyday lighting systems to help address myopia prevention and control among adolescents, demonstrating significant training efficacy and high compliance rates in this population.

An Invention Forged by a Father's Love

VCBeat has learned that the development of the Yeguangyuan vision training lamp began in 2007. At that time, Chen Ziping discovered that his child had developed myopia. Driven by a father’s love for his child, he embarked on research into myopia prevention and control.

Chen Ziping, Founder and Chairman of Wild Light Source

Chen Ziping is a National Senior Engineer, a National Talent for Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and a recipient of the China Patent Award. He has been engaged in research on information electronic technology, physical therapy, and biomedical engineering for over 20 years and holds more than 400 patented technologies.

For someone with a background in scientific research, the first instinct when encountering a problem is not to seek immediate solutions, but to investigate the underlying causes and address them at their source. Chen Ziping consulted numerous doctors and experts and learned that there are two primary causes of myopia:Issues with Eye Use and Light

Coincidentally, Chen Ziping was then engaged in the research, development, and production of Class II medical devices, such as physical therapy instruments and surgical shadowless lamps. “Since myopia is related to light, why not start from my area of expertise?”

Chen Ziping spent a year successfully developing the first vision training lamp and applied for a patent in 2008. At that time, an idea began to take root in his mind: “If one day the lamp I created could help more people and benefit society as a whole, it would certainly be a wonderful thing.”

However, the product at that time was based solely on theoretical principles, lacking scientific data to support its efficacy. It failed to meet the professional standards required in ophthalmology, making widespread adoption difficult. In the initial years following the launch of the training lamp, hardly anyone believed that this desk lamp could prevent myopia. Chen Ziping felt a deep sense of frustration and determination.

It was not until 2014 that Chen Ziping met Chen Xiang, Director of the Office at the Clinical Research Center of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University. Through Chen Xiang’s introduction, Chen Ziping connected with several preeminent ophthalmology experts, including Professor Ge Jian, Chief Scientist of the National 973 Program in Ophthalmology; Professor Chu Renyuan, former Director of the Key Laboratory of Myopia under the Ministry of Health; and Professor Zhang Mingzhi, Dean of the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, among others.

Following rigorous scientific evaluation by experts, the vision training lamp was introduced to the market on a small scale for testing in 2014 and received highly positive feedback. This undoubtedly served as a major boost to Chen Ziping’s confidence.

In 2015, Chen Ziping decided to officially launch the project and established Shenzhen Yeguanyuan Eye Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Yeguanyuan”), dedicated to addressing eye health issues among adolescents.

Ye Guangyuan has successively established collaborative R&D partnerships with leading domestic and international ophthalmic medical and research institutions, including the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University, the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales in Australia, to jointly promote the research, development, and application of its core technology, “Dynamic Light Source Simulating Natural Light.”

It is foreseeable that dynamic light sources will become the prevailing trend in healthy lighting in the future.

Targeting the Blue Ocean Market of Eye Health

The deeper Chen Ziping delves into the optometry industry, the more he perceives it as a highly promising sunrise sector with a substantial market size.

Currently, there are over 200 million students enrolled in basic education. With the relaxation of the two-child policy, the student population is expected to continue growing over the next decade. A survey conducted by the Eye Health Steward platform revealed that 93.78% of parents believe it is necessary to purchase a dedicated eye-protection study lamp for their children; however, nearly half of these parents remain uncertain about which type of lamp truly offers effective eye protection.

Professor Ge Jian, Chief Scientist of the National 973 Program in Ophthalmology, once pointed out, “Myopia is a serious scientific issue, but the proliferation of various eye-care concepts in society, coupled with the sale of related products without rigorous clinical validation, is also one of the reasons for the high prevalence of myopia.”

On November 8, 2015, CCTV News Channel’s “Weekly Quality Report” exposed that more than 90% of eye-care lamps on the market had serious quality issues.

Since its launch in 2007, the Ye Guangyuan Vision Training Lamp has undergone more than twenty technological upgrades and iterations, accumulating 40 related patented technologies. Its core technology was awarded the Excellence Award at the 18th China Patent Awards by the China National Intellectual Property Administration. Furthermore, the lamp has passed inspection by national medical device testing institutions, qualifying it for prescription by physicians to help prevent myopia and improve vision. It is a truly trustworthy lamp with proven eye-health benefits.

Furthermore, leveraging the WildLight training lamp, the company is building a smart eye-care ecosystem——Jianyan Cloud

The Wild Light Source Healthy Eye Cloud is a cloud computing platform built with cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence. It is an intelligent ecosystem for eye health based on ubiquitous computing. By aggregating information from all system participants and supported by experts, it provides users with real-time, precise new models for maintaining eye health, offers innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities for eye health enthusiasts, and provides ophthalmology professionals with a high-quality research platform.

Build a National Brand, Become China’s No. 1 Eye-Care Lamp

Chen Ziping told VCBeat that Ye Guangyuan’s goal is to become “China’s No. 1 Eye-Health Lamp.” So, how can this goal be achieved and benefit more people? Ye Guangyuan has its own strategic approach.

Build the brand first; do not rush to drive volume.Chen Ziping believes that only by first gaining recognition from professional doctors and establishing a strong reputation can Ye Guangyuan position itself as an expert in vision training products that integrate smart lighting with optometric technology in China.

Therefore, Yeguanyuan’s goal for this year is to capture 80% of the high-end market, including specialized ophthalmic hospitals, children’s specialized hospitals, and ophthalmology departments in Grade A tertiary hospitals. To rapidly penetrate the market, Yeguanyuan has established a rigorous agent screening mechanism, with standardized definitions for general agents, distributors, and retailers.

From B2B to B2C, multi-channel layout. In addition to the optometry and eyewear dispensing departments and vision care centers within hospitals, Wild Light Source will expand its customer reach in the future by launching its own e-commerce platform and establishing storefronts on JD.com and Tmall.

Go Global, Build a National Brand. As a unique eye-care product worldwide, the Yesource Vision Training Lamp holds equal appeal for overseas customers. Chen Ziping stated, “We are definitely entering the foreign market; in fact, it is imperative. Foreigners prefer exercising through physical activity. The Yesource Training Lamp simulates natural light, prompting the eyeballs to move accordingly, which essentially constitutes a form of exercise. Therefore, they highly appreciate it.” It is reported that Yesource has already secured multiple patents abroad and is preparing to apply for U.S. FDA certification. Yesource aims not only to become the leading eye-care lamp brand in China but also to achieve global leadership.

According to Chen Ziping, the Wild Light Source Training Lamp was officially launched in March this year and secured millions of yuan in orders within less than a month. Nevertheless, Chen Ziping remains unhurried, stating, “Rather than blindly expanding market coverage, we place greater emphasis on strategic thinking. We aim to ensure that every step we take in the future is solid and well-founded.” Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce more products, targeting the annual launch of one to two new models to help steer the direction of market development.

It is reported that Yeguanyuan is currently preparing for a new round of financing, aiming to leverage capital to make its products accessible to a broader population, safeguard people’s eye health, and benefit society as a whole.
