According to VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat), IBM and Baiyang Smart Technology are joining forces to create a benchmark project for the global application of Watson in the healthcare sector. This initiative aims to foster collaboration among top-tier medical institutions worldwide while establishing a global model to demonstrate the application of Watson on an international scale.
Recently, facilitated by Baiyang Intelligent Technology, IBM and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), a leading global cancer treatment institution in the United States, separately visited Peking University Cancer Hospital, the PLA Navy General Hospital, and Beijing Chaoyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Emergency Care. Additionally, they accompanied representatives from Sberbank of Russia (Sberbank) to observe Watson’s intelligent oncology consultation services at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Emergency Care.
IBM and MSKCC held in-depth discussions with the Navy General Hospital and the Chaoyang Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Emergency Rescue Center regarding the application of Watson in Chinese hospitals, and engaged in negotiations with Peking University Cancer Hospital on collaborative training for Watson.

Yu Zhonghe, Director of the Oncology Department at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Emergency Rescue Center, on behalf of the oncology team, highly affirmed the significance of Watson in promoting standardized, normalized, individualized, and comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, Watson demonstrates substantial advantages in enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic efficiency, facilitating physician development, and supporting multidisciplinary team consultations.

Wendy Perchick, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at MSKCC, expressed her deep appreciation for the hospital’s proactive adoption of Watson to serve cancer patients, as well as for the valuable feedback provided by the hospital’s oncology team. She noted that this is merely the beginning of a broader collaboration, and affirmed IBM’s commitment to continuously refining Watson, particularly by actively responding to localization needs to better support cancer patients in China.
After gaining a comprehensive understanding of Watson’s applications in Chinese hospitals, Alexey Rudenko, CEO of Sberbank, expressed strong endorsement for the use of artificial intelligence and praised the application scenarios developed by Baiyang Smart Technology. He noted that the application of AI in Russia’s healthcare sector is still in its early stages and has not yet been widely adopted, which was one of the key reasons for this visit to China. Sberbank plans to incorporate the insights gained from China into the Russian market, accelerate IBM’s development in Russia, and looks forward to Watson’s introduction to the country, expecting it to deliver better services to Russian patients.

Watson for Oncology has currently entered 14 countries worldwide, offering treatment plans covering 13 types of cancer, including breast cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Since signing a strategic cooperation agreement with Baiyang Intelligent Technology last March, Baiyang has leveraged the actual conditions of Chinese hospitals and cancer treatment to promote the establishment of AI-based multidisciplinary consultation centers in hospitals, thereby enabling Watson to bring greater development, growth, and therapeutic opportunities to hospitals, physicians, and patients.
In June this year, Baiyang Intelligent Technology and IBM reached a new agreement regarding Watson for Oncology, extending the exclusive master distribution rights from three years to eight years. Currently, nearly 80 hospitals in more than 20 provinces across China have introduced Watson Tumor Consultation Centers, marking rapid progress in the global application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Meanwhile, IBM’s clinical application experts and Baiyang’s medical and technical teams held working sessions on the localization of Watson, reaching a consensus.
Wang Biquan, Chief Marketing Officer of Baiyang Intelligent Technology, stated that Baiyang has long been committed to advancing the development of Watson in China. “We aim to further facilitate interaction and connectivity between top global cancer treatment institutions and their counterparts in China, helping Watson build upon its existing foundation of global best practices and academic knowledge in oncology to better incorporate the expertise and experience of leading Chinese oncologists. Looking ahead, Baiyang will continue to collaborate with IBM to promote the establishment of model hospitals in China, aligning with contemporary trends to help hospitals transform into smart hospitals, thereby extending their reach to more medical consortium member hospitals and patients.”
