Jul 30, 2018 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

United StatesIn 2017, Gartner released the report “Predicts 2017: Healthcare Providers Take a Step Toward Digital Business,” which forecasted five major trends in the digital transformation of healthcare institutions.

Prediction1: By 2020, 40% of healthcare institutions will find that their electronic health record (EHR) systems fail to meet business needs.

Prediction2: By 2022, 20% of patients with chronic diseases will rely on virtual medical services for health management, and services primarily based on internet healthcare modalities will prove to be more accurate, comprehensive, and clinically effective than manual interventions.

Prediction3: By 2021, 25% of healthcare institutions and a significant amount of capital will be invested in real-time, genomics-based clinical decision support systems. Precision medicine will see substantial development.

Prediction4: By 2021, biometric technology will account for 40% of the market for patient identification in healthcare institutions.

Prediction5: By 2022, one-third of hospitals will operate on cloud-based ERP systems, and this technological migration will have a significant impact on the market.

The phenomena currently being validated one by one in the United States will occur in China at an accelerating pace; as part of the global trend, this is an inevitable pattern. Admittedly, China’s hospital informatization market has its own culture and traditions, so these trends will manifest differently here. Nevertheless, it is essential for hospitals and health IT enterprises to proactively study these developments led by industry giants and make forward-looking preparations.
