Recently, SenseTime announced the establishment of a Smart Healthcare Laboratory in New Jersey, USA. Professor Dimitri Metaxas, a world-leading expert in the field of AI-driven healthcare, has joined the team and will serve as the Chief Scientist for Medical Image Analysis at the laboratory.
Previously, leveraging its leading technologies in computer vision and deep learning, SenseTime has already applied image recognition to computer-aided diagnosis for various types of tumors. With the establishment of its North America Smart Healthcare Laboratory, SenseTime will accelerate the research, development, and practical implementation of AI in the medical field, achieving comprehensive coverage across the entire medical continuum—including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation—and thereby advancing the development of AI-driven healthcare technologies.
Smart Healthcare Laboratory Drives Diverse Explorations in the Integration of Healthcare and AI
SenseTime’s North American Medical Laboratory is the company’s first overseas medical research lab. While focusing on cutting-edge exploration of artificial intelligence technologies in the medical field, the laboratory will also establish extensive collaborations with healthcare institutions, research organizations, and enterprises along the U.S. East Coast. By conducting exploration and practice tailored to the needs of real-world healthcare scenarios, it aims to provide doctors, patients, and medical institutions with more advanced and convenient AI-powered technologies and services for assisted diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Xu Li, Co-founder and CEO of SenseTime, stated: “SenseTime’s North America Medical Laboratory will serve as an open international platform, aiming to integrate high-quality resources from across the industry chain to foster synergy for innovation and transformation. This initiative seeks to continuously advance smart healthcare and align with international scientific research capabilities, ultimately providing the public with more accessible and intelligent medical and health services.”
As Chief Scientist of Laboratory Medical Imaging Analysis, Professor Dimitri Metaxas stated, “SenseTime is the world’s most valuable emerging AI enterprise, boasting state-of-the-art technologies and extensive applications in computer vision. At this optimal juncture for integrating AI with healthcare, I will join forces with SenseTime to combine my decades of experience and industry networks in the medical field with SenseTime’s world-leading computer vision technologies. Together, we will pursue diverse explorations at the intersection of medicine and AI, delivering outcomes that hold genuine clinical value.”
Professor Dimitri Metaxas currently serves as the Director of the Center for Computational Biomedical Imaging and Modeling in the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University, USA. With 25 years of extensive research experience and academic achievements in computer vision, biomedical engineering, and computer graphics, his publications have accumulated over 27,000 citations. He is a Fellow of several prestigious international organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI), and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Additionally, he has served multiple times as General Chair for top-tier conferences in computer vision and medical imaging, such as ICCV, CVPR, and MICCAI.
Universities and experts working in close collaboration with the SenseTime Smart Healthcare Laboratory include Leon Axel, a leading expert in cardiac imaging at New York University School of Medicine, and Kang Li, a professor at Rutgers University and a leading expert in AI-driven orthopedic imaging. At the laboratory’s inauguration ceremony, they shared their experiences in integrating artificial intelligence technologies with cardiac assessment, as well as with the diagnosis and personalized treatment of orthopedic diseases. Also attending the inauguration were numerous world-class experts from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the Institute for Hand and Arm Surgery, IBM, the global pharmaceutical giant Sanofi, and the Kessler Foundation Research Center.
Smart Healthcare Laboratory Accelerates SenseTime’s R&D and Implementation in the Medical Field
In fact, SenseTime had already begun investing in and strategically positioning itself within the smart healthcare sector. This March, SenseTime and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) established an Artificial Intelligence Alliance, jointly dedicated to the research, development, and application of comprehensive original AI technologies, including areas such as intelligent algorithms for brain science and medical imaging in clinical medicine and health.
With the establishment of the Smart Healthcare Laboratory, SenseTime will accelerate its research and development as well as implementation in the healthcare sector. Currently, SenseTime’s smart healthcare team has attracted numerous high-caliber international experts in fields such as artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and big data analytics. The team is also actively recruiting top-tier algorithm R&D professionals and healthcare industry talent in Beijing, Shanghai, and New Jersey, USA.
As a world-class AI “unicorn” valued at $4.5 billion, SenseTime has leveraged its original, leading technologies in computer vision and deep learning to achieve continuous breakthroughs in facial recognition, object recognition, and video analysis, while accelerating practical deployment by aligning with industry demands in smart cities, smartphones, internet entertainment, and automotive sectors. It is reported that SenseTime will collaborate with top-tier global medical resources to deepen the expansion and application of artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies in the healthcare field. VCBeat will continue to track and report on SenseTime’s developments in the healthcare sector.
