Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently serves as Dean of the School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and Director of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics; Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, and Zhejiang University; Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) and The Optical Society (OSA).

Led by Academician Zhuang Songlin, the Optical Engineering team comprises 71 scholars and over 200 graduate students. In the past three years, under his leadership, the team has undertaken or participated in six National 973 Program projects, three projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Support Plan, nearly 35 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and six Major Scientific Instrument Special Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, with ongoing research funding totaling nearly RMB 100 million. The developedControllable Capsule EndoscopyApproved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for clinical trials, with nearly 70,000 cases completed; developedCinema-grade 3D ProjectorEntered the cinema;Infrared Large-Screen Touchscreenhave also been mass-produced and marketed; spearheaded the establishment ofTerahertz Laboratory, has become one of the top-ranked laboratories in China.

Research Team Applies Modern Optics Advances in Medical Diagnostics

The World's First Positionable Capsule Endoscope

A single small capsule integrates a positioning system, imaging system, illumination system, power supply system, and wireless image transmission system. Measuring 11 mm by 24 mm, it is slightly larger than a conventional pill. The most distinctive feature of this capsule is its ability to wirelessly transmit images from within the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the capsule’s movement inside the body can be controlled externally by physicians, who can achieve precise control over its five degrees of freedom, with a positioning accuracy of up to 0.1 micrometers.

Terahertz Spectrometer

Terahertz spectroscopy can be applied in the detection of biopharmaceuticals and food products. It can detect the content of unsaturated fatty acids, animal fatty acids, and saturated fatty acids in oils, thereby determining whether the oil is illegally recycled cooking oil ("gutter oil"). The accuracy rate for blind sample testing reaches 94.7%, placing this technology at a leading level nationwide.

High-Speed Cell Imaging Technology

High-throughput detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) using high-speed cellular imaging technology enables the rapid identification of tumor cells in just a few milliliters of human blood. Currently, Academician Zhuang’s laboratory has achieved an imaging capacity of 10 million frames per second, with the technology’s maximum potential reaching 100 million frames per second, thereby resolving the challenge of high-throughput cell screening.

On September 26, Academician Zhuang Songlin, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Dean of the School of Optical-Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, will attend the “Infinity” – 2018 World Forum on Medical Technology, hosted by VCBeat, VBInsight, and the Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Coordination Department of the China High-Tech Industrialization Research Association, where he will share insights on the application of optics in medical diagnosis.

[Conference Details]

We can now see that digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing, and the Internet of Things are impacting various industries, with continuous technological innovation disrupting the healthcare sector.

With the introduction of the “Development Plan for New-Generation Artificial Intelligence” and the “Opinions on Promoting the Development of ‘Internet + Healthcare’,” capital has flooded into the sector, giving rise to numerous high-valued AI companies, while commercialization pathways continue to be explored.

With the release of the “Outline of the Healthy China 2030 Plan” and the establishment of three major health and medical data groups, the explosive growth in data—driven by declining costs of data acquisition from gene sequencing, wearable devices, and other sources—has laid a scalable foundation for big data and AI analytics.

With the growing acceptance of robotic applications in China’s healthcare sector and their widespread adoption across various stages of diagnosis and treatment, medical robots—particularly surgical robots—have become “high-demand products” within the robotics industry. Robots are increasingly being deployed in hospitals, with domestic technologies steadily catching up to their foreign counterparts.

Medical 3D printing has entered a transition period from the primary to the intermediate stage. Dental restoration and customized prosthetics have already achieved commercialization and are developing rapidly. Orthopedics has become a key focus of market competition, attracting various enterprises to strategically position themselves. Breakthroughs have been made in organ and tissue experiments, making human clinical applications promising.

In April this year, the National Health Commission released the "Standards and Specifications for Hospital Information Construction in China (Trial)," which clearly defined 21 application scenarios for IoT-based positioning and data monitoring. With the introduction of these standards, the direction of the IoT industry has become increasingly clear, and scenario-based applications are beginning to stand out.

In the genomics sector, tumor detection is poised for rapid growth, microbiomics is gradually maturing under policy guidance, and consumer genetic testing has entered the “20-yuan” era.

Technology innovation companies have begun to explore their own paths for practical application, scaling from 1 to N...

The 2018 World Forum on Medical Technology, themed “Infinity,” will be held at the Le Méridien Shanghai Minhang Baolong Hotel from September 26 to September 27, 2018.

This forum will bring together domestic and international medical service providers, listed companies, financial institutions, and healthcare innovation enterprises centered on technological innovation. It will explore five key dimensions—policy, capital, data, technology, and commercialization pathways—focusing on the commercial applications of five major technologies (artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, 3D printing, and IoT, and genetic testing) within hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and third-party medical service providers. The event will feature eight core forums, discuss over 80 hot topics, and invite more than 80 industry leaders, 100+ investors, 300+ entrepreneurs, and 30+ media representatives to gather in Shanghai for intellectual exchange and collaboration.

This industry forum is tailor-made for “you” if you are a government official or healthcare practitioner focused on technological innovation in health and medicine; a professional across the relevant industrial chain, including leaders of healthcare IT companies, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms, and insurance companies; industry investors; healthcare media professionals; or executives of listed companies and startups that have deployed big data and AI+healthcare solutions.
