Recently, Alibaba released its latest quarterly financial report. Amidst a broader market downturn, Alibaba Group has surged ahead, with group revenue increasing by 61% year-on-year to reach RMB 80.92 billion. Its key new business, Alibaba Cloud, grew by as much as 93%, reaching RMB 4.698 billion, firmly securing its position as the third-largest cloud service provider globally. Prior to this, Ant Financial, another major business unit of Alibaba, completed a new round of financing, achieving a valuation of USD 150 billion. Among the BAT companies (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent), Alibaba has undoubtedly delivered the most impressive financial performance.


Unbeknownst to many, Alibaba has truly transformed itself into a technology and big data company through new businesses representing its second and third growth curves, such as Ant Financial, Alibaba Cloud, and Cainiao Logistics. For example, during the FIFA World Cup in June, Alibaba Cloud provided full-stack technical support for video platforms including Youku, CCTV Video, and CCTV-5, delivering products and technologies such as elastic computing, CDN, Video AI, and Narrowband HD 2.0. Behind Alibaba’s impressive track record lies a substantial history of failures. To summarize, an internal saying at Alibaba captures this reality: most follow-on businesses failed, while the successes were all strategic initiatives oriented toward the future. For instance, Alibaba’s attempts to follow established models in online portals and instant messaging did not succeed. However, it achieved remarkable success in e-commerce, payments, and cloud computing—sectors where there were no existing domestic benchmarks.


In 2017, before the outbreak of the U.S.-China trade war, Alibaba announced a RMB 100 billion investment to establish the DAMO Academy, formally entering the arena of world-class technological research and competition. With world-renowned scientists leading efforts in many key fields, the DAMO Academy achieved 20 world-first breakthroughs within less than a year of its establishment. Following the outbreak of the U.S.-China trade war, Alibaba acquired C-Sky Microsystems, fully immersing itself in the chip industry. Examining Corporate Top-Level Design Through Alibaba’s Practices: Alibaba has undergone numerous strategic shifts throughout its history, with the most impactful being the strategic meeting held in September 2007. This meeting was exceptionally challenging, but it marked the first time Alibaba articulated its ten-year strategy: to build an open, collaborative, and thriving e-commerce ecosystem. Following this decision, Alibaba implemented the most significant organizational restructuring in its history: eight presidents were reassigned, the COO departed, the CTO departed, the head of sales departed, and Sun Tongyu, the founder of Taobao, also left. In late April 2018, Vice Premier of the State Council Sun Chunlan visited Yinchuan Municipal Hospital for an investigative survey and affirmed the “Internet + Healthcare” model in Yinchuan.
