Five years ago, it was hard to imagine experts in IT computing, bioengineering, and medicine gathering together. Within the traditional knowledge and research framework, there were vast gaps between these disciplines. However, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies and the ongoing transformation of healthcare services, a growing number of people now recognize that integrating these technologies is essential to more effectively drive progress in service delivery.

According to data from VCBeat, there have been over 3,500 reports on the intersection of artificial intelligence and medicine since 2014.

September 22–23, 2018, by Yanqi Lake in Beijing, marking the 40th anniversary of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,2018 China Medical Artificial Intelligence Conference & The 1st AI Yanqi High-End Forumheld. The conference was hosted by the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, among others. It was organized by the School of Computer Science and Control Engineering at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Smart Healthcare Professional Committee of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, the Medical Imaging Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, and the Healthcare and Health Industry Branch of the China Information Association, among others.Wu Jian, Xu Jungang, Zhang Chengwen, Zhao DiCo-Chairs of the Conference (listed in order of the number of strokes in their surnames).

Through an analysis of the keywords from the speakers at this event, VCBeat found that in addition to "AI + Imaging" being the hottest topic, there were also "Clinical Practice, Data Algorithms, Precision Medicine“Three keywords spark heated debate among experts.”

First, all experts are increasingly focusing on “Clinical Practice“(Attention Index: 50), including for certain special diseases and specific departments such as Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular medicine, pediatrics, and pathology, artificial intelligence is advancing from foundational technological research into clinical practice.”

Second, “Data CalculationLaw“(Attention Index: 42),” indicating that as the application of AI-based counting becomes increasingly widespread, the industry is conducting more in-depth research into algorithms—including deep learning, machine learning, and semi-supervised learning—to address challenges encountered in clinical practice.

Third, “Precision Medicine“ (Attention Index 15), the boundaries between disciplines such as bioengineering, IT computing, and medicine are becoming increasingly blurred, with interdisciplinary studies and multi-domain information interaction garnering growing attention.

Note: The “Attention Index” mentioned in this article is calculated by weighting keyword counts, with “AI + Imaging” set as the baseline of 100. The relative frequency of other keywords is then used to determine the industry’s level of interest in the respective fields.
