Recently, Alibaba released its latest quarterly financial report. Amid a broader market downturn, Alibaba Group has surged ahead, with group revenue increasing by 61% year-over-year to reach RMB 80.92 billion. Its key new business, Alibaba Cloud, grew by as much as 93%, reaching RMB 4.698 billion, firmly securing its position as the third-largest cloud provider worldwide. Prior to this, Ant Financial, another major business unit of Alibaba, secured a new round of financing, achieving a valuation of USD 150 billion. Among the BAT companies (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent), Alibaba has undoubtedly delivered the most impressive financial results.


Unbeknownst to many, Alibaba has truly transformed itself into a technology and big data company through new businesses representing its second and third growth curves, such as Ant Financial, Alibaba Cloud, and Cainiao Logistics. For example, during the FIFA World Cup in June, Alibaba Cloud provided full-stack technical support for video platforms including Youku, CCTV Video, and CCTV-5, delivering products and technologies such as elastic computing, CDN, Video AI, and Narrowband HD 2.0. The peak traffic during the World Cup reached 1.5 times the scale of the live broadcast of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

In 2016, Jack Ma proposed the “Five New Strategies and One Peace,” which subsequently triggered disruptive innovations across multiple sectors, including New Retail, and for the first time elevated data to the status of a new energy source. In 2018, Jack Ma further introduced the “New Three Perspectives”: a holistic view, a future-oriented view, and a global view. When did Alibaba fully embark on its technology- and data-driven development path?


Alibaba has undergone multiple strategic shifts throughout its history, the most impactful of which was the strategy meeting held in September 2007. This meeting was exceedingly difficult, but it marked the first time that Alibaba’s ten-year strategy was articulated: to build an open, collaborative, and thriving e-commerce ecosystem. Following this decision, Alibaba implemented the most significant organizational restructuring in its history: eight presidents were reassigned, the COO departed, the CTO departed, the head of sales departed, and Sun Tongyu, the founder of Taobao, also left. Four executives were transferred to new roles; the president of Alipay became the president of Taobao, while a vice president of Taobao assumed the role of president of Alipay. In late April 2018, Yinchuan’s “Internet + Healthcare” model received official recognition. Subsequently, national leaders visited Yinchuan Municipal Hospital to conduct field research on the Yinchuan Model. Expressing high satisfaction, they pointed out that this model could address the current shortage of high-quality medical resources in western China. They further proposed that Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region serve as a pilot zone for “Internet + Health,” to accumulate experience and gradually promote the model nationwide.
