Comfort-Oriented Pediatric Dental Care: An Inevitable Trend in the Experience Economy
In recent years, the concept of painless and comfortable dental treatment has gained increasingly widespread dissemination and recognition in China. Medical institutions in second- and third-tier cities have, to varying degrees, implemented sedation and analgesia techniques, making comfort-oriented care one of the trends in medical development.
To promote the development of comfortable dental treatment for children, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that the “Care from the Heart · Comfortable Treatment” 2018 Second Symposium on Comfortable Pediatric Dental Treatment, hosted by Beijing Jingdu Children’s Hospital and co-organized by the Stomatological Professional Committee of the Changping Non-Public Enterprises Association, was held on October 13–14, 2018. The symposium featured comprehensive exchanges and discussions on topics such as the development path, key issues, risk prevention and control, and behavior guidance in comfortable pediatric dental treatment, with the aim of advancing the application and development of new technologies in this field.
At the conference, Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital announced the official opening of its Comfortable Dental Treatment Center, the first of its kind in northern Beijing. It is understood that the center was established to alleviate the pressure on medical services and reduce waiting times for pediatric dental patients, with the primary goal of meeting children’s needs for painless and comfortable treatment.
After more than a year of design and construction, the clinical area of the Comfortable Dental Treatment Center has been expanded to nearly 1,000 square meters. The facility now features 10 additional dental chairs, five VIP treatment rooms with distinct themes, three VVIP treatment rooms, and two general anesthesia operating rooms. It is equipped with advanced imported devices from Germany, including one KaVo E80 and four KaVo E50 comprehensive dental treatment units, as well as dental chairs for general anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation machines. These enhancements enable the center to provide precise and professional dental care services to a greater number of pediatric patients in need.

According to the results of the Fourth National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey, the prevalence of dental caries in primary teeth among 5-year-old children in China was 70.1%, and the prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth among 12-year-old children was 34.5%. Notably, the rate of dental caries among 5-year-olds in China is at a relatively high level globally. Although parental awareness of children’s oral health has been continuously improving, limitations associated with traditional pediatric dental treatment methods, coupled with children’s fear of dental visits and lack of cooperation, not only cause anxiety and concern among parents but also adversely affect the progress and outcomes of oral disease treatment.

Comfort-oriented dental care employs psychological counseling, behavioral guidance, distraction techniques, nitrous oxide inhalation, STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia) local drug delivery, moderate-to-deep sedation, and even general anesthesia. These methods and technologies enable patients to undergo dental treatment in a pain-free and comfortable state, prioritizing comfort and human-centered care while ensuring safety. With the child’s cooperation and the dentist’s orderly and efficient operational techniques, the entire treatment process is comfortable, safe, and completely painless.
To fully ensure children's safety, the entire process of comfortable dental treatment is accompanied not only by professional dentists and nurses but also by anesthesiologists and nurses from the Department of Anesthesiology. Before administering sedation and analgesia, experts will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the child's overall health status and then propose a reasonable comfort-oriented diagnosis and treatment plan. This approach ensures both the effectiveness of sedation and analgesia and the safety of the pediatric patient.
During the conference, Sun Xuding, Executive President of Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital, stated that comfortable dental treatment represents a new direction in the development of dentistry. The Department of Stomatology at Beijing Jingdu Children's Hospital is among the first outpatient clinics in China to offer comfortable dental care.
“The successful establishment and launch of the Center for Comfortable Dental Care marks another milestone for our hospital, significantly driving its development. In the future, we will continue to strengthen the construction of various disciplines, introduce new equipment and facilities, enhance the overall level of the hospital, and provide higher-quality diagnostic and treatment services for pediatric patients.”

With the increasing number of pediatric patients with oral diseases, their demands for dental treatment continue to rise. This growing demand has also facilitated the widespread adoption of painless and comfortable dental treatment concepts in China. Many large and medium-sized hospitals are transforming their service philosophies, improving service measures, and optimizing service environments, striving to provide “patient-centered” comfortable medical services. These efforts aim to adapt to the healthcare market under the new circumstances and enhance hospital competitiveness.
Professor Zhang Fangming, Deputy Director of the Department of Stomatology at Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, stated, “Comfort-oriented treatment has become a trend in the development of human medicine and represents a new direction and driving force for every practitioner in the field of dentistry.”
