VCBeat (WeChat: vcbeat) has learned that on October 15, Hainan Province achieved a new breakthrough in the development of integrated medical and elderly care services. With the support of the Hainan Provincial Health Commission and the Chinese Hospital Association, Kerry Sorensen, President of Canada’s Seven Oaks General Hospital and CEO of CWI, formally signed a letter of intent for cooperation on establishing an international friendly hospital partnership with Chen Zhong, Party Secretary and President of Hainan Third People’s Hospital.

Canada Wellness Institute (hereinafter referred to as “CWI”) will establish its presence in Hainan Province, providing full-lifecycle health management services to residents and tourists within the province. Wei Haizhu, Director of the Medical Management Service Guidance Center under the Hainan Provincial Health Commission and Executive Vice President of the Hainan Health Management Association, and Zhou Shenglai, Chairman of the Disease and Health Professional Committee of the Chinese Hospital Association and Director of the Tsinghua University Healthy China Leadership Research Center, attended and witnessed the signing ceremony.
Established in 1997, CWI leverages advanced medical fitness facilities and a professional medical team to develop personalized treatment plans based on clinical evidence-based medicine. It has served over 6 million patient visits, prevented nearly 10,000 cardiac incidents, and facilitated a total weight loss of 120,000 pounds among the population. Notably, in the area of chronic kidney disease alone, it has saved the Manitoba provincial government nearly CAD 400 million in healthcare expenditures, earning global acclaim for its exceptional therapeutic management outcomes.
“As a nationally renowned longevity island, Hainan boasts unique advantages in climate, environment, and policy for developing the integrated health and elderly care industry. The cooperation between both parties holds immense potential and room for growth, which will help deepen healthcare collaboration between China and Canada,” said Kerry Sorendsen.
Hainan Third People’s Hospital, founded in 1962, is an integrated medical center providing healthcare, teaching, scientific research, rehabilitation, and emergency services. As the earliest Grade A tertiary hospital in southern Hainan Province, it has repeatedly undertaken healthcare support tasks for major state events such as the Boao Forum for Asia. Chen Zhong stated that CWI, as a world-leading healthcare service provider, has developed a scientific and effective chronic disease management program. This collaboration will accelerate the establishment of the “China-Canada International Friendship Hospital,” further enhance the development of Hainan Province’s integrated medical and elderly care system, and bring health benefits to more people.
It is understood that this collaboration will leverage the complementary strengths of both parties to explore the establishment of a Canadian Health Management Center in Sanya; actively investigate new methods and clinical pathways for chronic disease intervention and lifestyle medicine; jointly apply for and collaborate on domestic and international research projects; and jointly advance cooperation in health management, chronic disease rehabilitation, and the training and development of professionals in lifestyle medicine.
