Investor Perspectives

Huagai Capital, Xu Xiaolin

I believe that over the next 5 to 18 years, investment opportunities in China’s pharmaceutical industry will center on two strategic directions encapsulated in eight Chinese characters: first, investing in R&D innovation by partnering with early-stage scientists and innovative teams; and second, pursuing mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and consolidation. Regardless of whether we look at industry, commerce, or services, or whether we consider medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or hospitals, China lacks truly mega-sized enterprises. The healthcare sector remains fragmented, scattered, and disorganized, presenting substantial M&A opportunities. Over the past three years, Chinese companies have actively engaged in cross-border M&A: deal volume stood at only USD 1 billion in 2015 but surpassed USD 4 billion by 2017. I anticipate this trend will become even more pronounced in the future. As the secondary market continues to expand, opportunities for cross-border arbitrage will persist, particularly those driven by technology and industrial consolidation. (Source: Pedaily)
