On November 6, at the Canada Pavilion of the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co., Ltd. signed with the Canadian Health Management Center (China) the largest strategic cooperation agreement in the health sector between China and Canada at this year’s CIIE, ushering in a new chapter in strategic collaboration between the two countries in the fields of health and insurance.

This collaboration signals that China has entered a new phase of development in the field of health management. Moving forward, stakeholders will integrate advantageous resources—including experts, technology, and data—to jointly advance the establishment of 400 high-end health management centers that adhere to internationally leading core concepts. These next-generation health management centers, which leverage big data, artificial intelligence, professional medical rehabilitation, and health management capabilities, will operate around a core closed-loop system encompassing “wellness, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and insurance.” They will provide users with comprehensive health management and assurance services, thereby elevating the nation’s overall health standards and safeguarding the realization of the ambitious “Healthy China” initiative.

Emerging Technologies Drive the Upgrading of the Insurance Industry

Amid the rapid development of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and artificial intelligence, the insurance industry is ushering in a new era of transformation. In the global market, the concept of InsurTech has become a strategic focus for an increasing number of insurers. Some companies have already achieved notable success in areas such as Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) and health insurance technology, leading to a continuous rise in the proportion of InsurTech-related business.

Just a month and a half ago, U.S. life insurance giant John Hancock officially announced that it would no longer sell traditional life insurance policies. Instead, all policies will be bundled with the “Vitality Program,” designed to help policyholders live longer, healthier lives. By integrating behavioral economics with consumer technology, the program uses incentive mechanisms to motivate individuals to make healthier choices related to physical activity, nutrition, and mindfulness.

This announcement has directly sounded the charge for the global insurance industry to leverage new technological means for transformation and upgrading.

Strategic Alliance to Create a Closed-Loop Service

Against this backdrop, the signing agreement between Miao Health, the Canadian Health Management Center (China), and China Pacific Insurance holds even greater significance.

Strengthening Foundations to Drive Smart Insurance

The insurance industry currently faces numerous challenges, including homogeneous competition, low customer stickiness, high loss ratios, and information asymmetry. “After more than three years of exploration, Miao Jiankang has built a comprehensive empowerment service system centered on health data tracking capabilities, AI-driven health intervention capabilities, and gamified operational capabilities. This system helps insurance companies enhance customer acquisition and conversion, develop differentiated insurance products, improve user affinity and stickiness, and reduce loss ratios, while simultaneously helping users continuously improve their health behaviors to achieve the ultimate goal of extending lifespan,” said Kong Fei, CEO of Miao Jiankang.

To further enhance the effectiveness of health management, in March this year, Miao Health established a joint venture with the Canadian Health Management Centre, a world-leading health management institution. The partnership is dedicated to integrating the Canadian Health Management Centre’s offline clinical expertise with Miao Health’s internet-based health management approaches, and combining health big data and health behavior big data with artificial intelligence to create a new model of health management underpinned by emerging technologies.

This tripartite collaboration marks not only the first large-scale, in-depth partnership between China’s leading insurance enterprises and top-tier health management institutions, but also a landmark event in the cross-sector integration of “Internet + Health Management + Insurance.” With the formal launch of this partnership, both the insurance and healthcare industries will officially usher in an industrial transformation driven by new technologies.
