Recently, Qiming Venture Partners’ portfolio company Xiantong Medicine has secured global licensing rights from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a novel radiopharmaceutical drug for the treatment of prostate cancer.
In accordance with relevant U.S. laws, the NIH has granted Xiantong Medicine an exclusive global license to develop and commercialize its invention of radionuclide therapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.
Established in 2004 and headquartered in Beijing, China, Xiantong Medicine initially aimed to develop, manufacture, and commercialize imported drugs and generic medicines in China. Since 2014, the company has expanded its business into the development and commercialization of radiopharmaceuticals. Through technology licensing and independent R&D, it has built a portfolio of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceutical products targeting neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and oncology.
Dr. Xiaoyuan Chen of the NIH, one of the inventors of the project’s patent, delivered an academic presentation on radiopharmaceutical therapy for metastatic prostate cancer at the project’s licensing launch event. He systematically outlined the nearly decade-long research journey behind this invention, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Orit Jacobson Weiss, and reviewed the achievements attained at each stage.
Professor Zhu Zhaohui from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, a renowned expert in the translational application of nuclear medicine, provided a comprehensive overview of therapeutic radionuclides, offering the audience deeper insights into this class of products.
Luo Zhifu, Chairman of the Isotope Branch of the Chinese Nuclear Society, expressed high expectations for the potential efficacy of this investigational drug in treating metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. He stated that if successfully developed, this therapy would play a significant role in extending survival and improving the quality of life for patients with this condition.
Xu Xinsheng, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xiantong Medicine, stated, “We are delighted to secure this patent license from the highly prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH). The introduction of this project marks Xiantong Medicine’s entry into the era of therapeutic radiopharmaceutical development, which will reshape the company’s future.”
