VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that on November 7, 2018, U.S. local time, Insulet (NASDAQ: PODD), the global leader in tubeless insulin pump technology, announced a partnership with Samsung Electronics America. Under the collaboration, Insulet’s Omnipod Insulin Management System will utilize Samsung Galaxy smartphones as its control device. Once approved, this system will become the first product to enable consumers to safely control their insulin pump therapy using their personal Galaxy smartphones.

The Omnipod Insulin Management System, an innovative alternative to traditional insulin delivery methods launched by Insulet, features a simple, wearable design with a single-use Pod that provides up to three days of uninterrupted insulin delivery without the need for needle handling. Leveraging its unique technological advantages, Insulet has also expanded the applicability of the Omnipod system to multiple areas of non-insulin subcutaneous drug delivery.

Recently, Insulet’s Omnipod Dash insulin management system received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Initially, the system could only operate via an application running on designated Galaxy smart devices. However, Dr. David Rhew, Vice President, General Manager, and CEO of Samsung Enterprise Medical, stated that their long-term vision is to enable users to control and manage their insulin therapy using their own Galaxy smartphones. This initiative relies, in part, on Samsung’s hardware and its high-standard mobile security software platform.

All Samsung mobile devices come equipped with the Samsung Knox mobile security platform, which comprises a multi-layered defense system and security mechanisms to mitigate cybersecurity risks. This collaboration enables the Samsung Knox platform to complement the security features of Insulet’s Omnipod Dash system. By verifying the integrity of Samsung mobile devices through hardware-level checks and extended operating system validations, the platform establishes a highly secure environment. This allows users to safely operate their Omnipod Dash systems via their smartphones.

Shacey Petrovic, President and Chief Operating Officer of Insulet, stated: “In recent years, there have been many exciting advancements, including enabling individuals to improve their diabetes management through smartphone-based control. However, because we provide life-sustaining therapy to our users, we must uphold the highest safety standards. We are delighted to partner with Samsung, a global leader in smartphones, to empower our users to manage their diabetes in a simple and secure manner.”

Today, Insulet users can not only conveniently and quickly view their health data using their personal Galaxy smartphones but also use them for medication management.

In addition to its partnership with Insulet, Samsung had already ventured into the digital health sector earlier, such as by providing patients with diabetes management, telemedicine, and other healthcare services through its Samsung Health Management Platform.
