Leveraging multiple new technologies on the “Edison” intelligent platform, GE Healthcare’s global portfolio of more than 200 medical imaging applications will enable expanded functionality to enhance scanning continuity, help clinicians promptly identify and prioritize acute cases, and extend equipment service life.
The “Edison” platform also provides a tool that tracks data sources and data usage during the development of AI-integrated medical applications, thereby simplifying the development of compliance algorithms.
“Edison” is the most comprehensive integrated digital application development platform in the healthcare industry to date, capable of consolidating global, diverse data across different business departments, vendors, medical networks, and life science application scenarios.
November 25, 2018, Chicago, USA — At the annual Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting, GE Healthcare unveiled a series of new medical applications and intelligent medical devices based on the “Edison” platform, aiming to accelerate the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in healthcare and empower healthcare institutions to deliver faster and more precise medical services to patients. As a key component of GE Healthcare’s global digital portfolio, the Edison platform will enable seamless integration with existing AI partners and their related products. Clinical partners will develop algorithms based on the Edison platform, while technology partners will collaborate with GE Healthcare to apply the latest data processing advancements to applications and intelligent devices built on the Edison platform.
According to third-party data projections, the medical artificial intelligence market is expected to reach $6.6 billion by 2021, with 39% of healthcare institutions investing in artificial intelligence, deep learning, and predictive analytics technologies. GE Healthcare sees strong global potential in the Edison platform and showcased a series of new medical applications and intelligent medical devices based on the “Edison” platform at this year’s RSNA Annual Meeting, including:
AIRx*, an AI-powered automated workflow tool for brain MR scanning, enhances consistency and efficiency. AIRx provides automated thin-slice scanning to minimize manual pre-scan operations, reduce repeat scans caused by variability in human and equipment performance, and improve scan success rates. Consistent scanning is particularly critical for the long-term assessment of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis. The built-in neural network model in AIRx has undergone intelligent training on more than 36,000 clinical case images using deep learning algorithms and anatomical recognition technology. (*AIRx is pending FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States and is not yet commercially available.)
The Critical Care Suite* based on the Optima XR240amx accurately identifies patients at critical risk of pneumothorax through point-of-care examinations. Powered by artificial intelligence algorithms, the Critical Care Suite is designed to detect potentially life-threatening conditions with high precision (>0.95 AUC) during pneumothorax monitoring via chest X-rays, and it enables the sharing of examination results through on-screen notifications. For instance, when a pneumothorax is detected, the point-of-care monitoring system sends an urgent alert to the clinical team, prompting physicians to prioritize review of the relevant images. The AI diagnostic results are transmitted to the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for verification of critical findings by radiologists. (*This suite is pending FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States and is not yet commercially available.)
CT Intelligent Subscription Applications provide access to the latest CT software, thereby extending the lifecycle of medical equipment and enhancing its utilization value. Hospitals can select appropriate applications based on their specific needs, including those for intracranial hemorrhage detection, stroke monitoring, routine scan dose reduction and optimization, and cardiac function assessment.
Automated lesion segmentation is available on the LOGIQ™ E10 to help improve healthcare efficiency. Automated lesion segmentation eliminates the need for manual lesion measurement by automatically providing lesion contours and their corresponding areas through the delineation of identified thoracic, thyroid, or hepatic lesions.

“As a development partner for the emergency care kit, Dr. Rachael Callcut, Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), surgeon at UCSF Health, and member of the Center for Digital Health Innovation, stated: ‘Complex data holds much hidden meaning, but unlocking its value requires diverse and sophisticated analytical capabilities. Artificial intelligence gives us the opportunity to identify overlooked patterns and transform how we treat patients, ultimately improving clinical outcomes.’”
The “Edison” platform also offers a highly valuable service—ensuring data traceability throughout the algorithm development process, enabling tracking of data sources as well as the processing, usage, and status of the data. The “Edison” platform embodies GE Healthcare’s commitment to the safe, appropriate, and efficient use of artificial intelligence technologies. It enhances clinicians’ trust in the technology and significantly streamlines the development workflow for researchers, thereby accelerating the compatible application of artificial intelligence.
For hospital administrators, the “Edison” platform enables intelligent workflows and continuously adds value to GE Healthcare’s millions of installed medical devices worldwide. The “Edison” platform integrates a variety of proven, high-quality intelligent tools and algorithms. For clinicians, using application-based intelligent tools developed on the “Edison” platform helps them achieve faster and more accurate diagnoses. Developers leveraging the “Edison” platform benefit from an integrated digital ecosystem that aggregates diverse data from different departments, vendors, and various healthcare services and application scenarios, empowering them to continually develop richer intelligent applications in the medical field.
