Laying the Foundation for a Standardized Respiratory Disease Prevention and Treatment System at the Grassroots Level: The 3rd China Forum on Respiratory Disease Prevention and Treatment in Primary Care Held in Hangzhou

Nearly 4,000 primary care pulmonologists, general practitioners, and other relevant stakeholders from more than 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China attended the conference.

This academic forum focused on primary care, and in light of the practical needs of primary care physicians and healthcare institutions in China, it hosted targeted and practical specialized sub-forums on topics including discipline construction and development at the primary level, chronic airway diseases, pulmonary infectious diseases, and other pulmonary disorders.

Through a strategic layout integrating medical care, education, and research, and by facilitating diverse academic exchange activities, we aim to summarize experiences and achievements, broaden perspectives, enhance primary healthcare workers’ awareness of the hazards of respiratory diseases, and improve primary care physicians’ standardized diagnosis, treatment capabilities, and skills in managing respiratory conditions.

The forum spanned three days. During the event, the following ceremonies were held: the award ceremony for the 2nd “Soong Ching Ling Most Beautiful Grassroots Respiratory Physicians” Award; the plaque-awarding ceremony for the Project on Standardized Prevention and Control System and Capacity Building for Respiratory Diseases in Primary Healthcare Institutions; the award ceremony for winners of the national finals of the “Zhi Xiang Hu Xi” (Knowledge Sharing in Respiratory Care) training and knowledge competition on chronic airway diseases for county- and city-level hospitals; the inauguration ceremony of the Young Elite Group of the China Alliance for Prevention and Control of Respiratory Diseases at the Grassroots Level; the establishment ceremony of the China Alliance for Prevention and Control of Pediatric Respiratory Diseases at the Grassroots Level; the launch ceremony of the Discipline Development Project for Grassroots Hospitals under the theme “Deep Breathing, Joint Development”; and the award ceremony for outstanding papers at the 3rd China Academic Forum on Prevention and Control of Grassroots Respiratory Diseases.

While summarizing and recognizing the achievements and contributions of primary care physicians in 2018, this forum addressed the clinical practice needs of primary care physicians and new trends and challenges arising from China’s healthcare reforms, such as tiered diagnosis and treatment. It invited renowned domestic and international experts to conduct in-depth and extensive discussions on advanced experiences in the prevention and management of respiratory diseases at the primary care level, China’s policies on primary care for respiratory diseases, and standardized diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. This initiative will lay a solid foundation for establishing a standardized system for the prevention and control of respiratory diseases at the primary care level in China.
