BioMed is a biopharmaceutical innovation company led by David Hochman and Darren R. Sherman, dedicated to developing evidence-based therapeutic solutions. The company primarily focuses on unmet needs in cardiovascular diseases, with core expertise in innovation and product development spanning drug delivery, interventional devices, bioelectronics, and neuromodulation. According to World Health Organization statistics, these diseases claim more than 17.7 million lives annually, accounting for 31% of global deaths.
BackBeat CNT, one of BioMed’s lead candidate products, is a patented solution that treats hypertension through implantable cardiac stimulation. This therapy has been proven to achieve long-term reductions in systolic blood pressure, thereby significantly lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. BackBeat CNT can be readily integrated into existing cardiac rhythm management devices. Its applications span both the current care of hypertensive patients who already require pacemakers and those with severe hypertension who do not. This positions the product to capture an annual market revenue opportunity exceeding $5 billion.
BioMed’s other lead candidate product, Virtue SEB, is a novel, first-in-class drug/device combination product that delivers delayed-release, sirolimus-coated bioresorbable particles to arteries during balloon angioplasty for the treatment of atherosclerotic disease. Its key feature is achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes without requiring the implantation of permanent devices. Virtue SEB is indicated for in-stent restenosis, small vessel disease, and below-the-knee lesions.
In addition to driving the development of two products, BackBeat CNT and Virtue SEB, BioMed operates a wholly-owned subsidiary, FreeHold Surgical, which primarily manufactures commercial-grade advanced surgical assistance devices and serves as a key production line for BioMed. Furthermore, BioMed holds significant strategic equity stakes in other medical device companies, including publicly traded entities such as MotusGrote® Holdings (NASDAQ: MOTS).
