From February 11 to 15, the 2019 HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as HIMSS19) was held in Orlando, Florida, USA. As the world’s leading health information and technology event, it brought together 45,000 professionals, clinicians, executives, and vendors from more than 90 countries.
At the HIMSS19 conference, Zynx Health, a U.S. market leader dedicated to providing clinical decision support solutions, unveiled Lumynz, a new clinical decision support system (CDSS), designed to help healthcare providers address critical issues related to appropriate care and accurate billing.
Zynx Health, a subsidiary of the Hearst Corporation, was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Los Angeles, California, USA. The company provides services to more than 1,900 hospitals and outpatient departments worldwide, although the majority of its clients are located in the United States. As of 2012, Zynx Health’s products and services impacted over 50% of U.S. hospitals.
Since its inception, Zynx Health has been dedicated to providing evidence- and experience-based clinical decision support solutions. Its latest innovation, Lumynz, is a groundbreaking monitoring and analytics SaaS platform designed to measure evidence-based interventions and their impact on financial outcomes.

It is understood that Lumynz leverages machine learning to provide interactive, retrospective analyses of order utilization, comparing the impact of evidence-based interventions—proven to improve care outcomes—on such utilization. The analysis highlights how clinicians can leverage these interventions to identify opportunities for reducing unwarranted variation in care.
Lumynz enables hospital leaders to communicate with clinicians through targeted messaging, guiding patient care and enhancing the clinical decision-making process. Additionally, Lumynz can assess whether the care provided by physicians is accurately reflected in charge description masters (CDM) and patient billing statements.

“With Lumynz, hospitals have an interactive solution that helps them realize the full value of evidence-based, standardized clinical actions,” said Kevin J. Daly, President of Zynx Health.
He further stated, “Over the past decade, healthcare organizations have invested millions of dollars in implementing Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) systems that incorporate evidence-based protocols. However, few hospitals possess reliable solutions to verify whether clinicians are actually adhering to these interventions. Lumynz provides hospitals with a method to measure compliance against evidence-based care standards, enabling hospital leaders to take appropriate actions to ensure physicians deliver correct patient care and achieve more accurate billing. Furthermore, Lumynz helps hospital leaders monitor whether initiatives aimed at improving care truly influence clinician behavior.”
Kelly Philiba, a physician informatics specialist at Health Quest, an innovation partner of Zynx Health, added, “Lumynz enables us to gain a comprehensive view of evidence-based practice from both clinical and financial perspectives. In March 2018, we implemented VTE prevention alerts, but temporarily deactivated them in May for troubleshooting. Lumynz revealed an initial 20% increase in adherence to this critical intervention, reflecting the differences between alert deactivation and reactivation, and provided specific verification that at least 92% of heart failure patients received evidence-based care. This offered us retrospective insights, with Lumynz helping us visualize these processes. More importantly, these data provide us with a method to delve deeper into the ‘reasons’ behind the adoption of certain interventions.”
Connolly stated that the system is evolving toward more specific, actionable, and data-driven clinical decision support to improve patient care outcomes. “It further identifies revenue opportunities arising from the overuse or underutilization of medical services, linking charges to the healthcare services provided.”
At this week’s HIMSS19 conference, Zynx Health will focus on a range of topics, including preventing unwarranted variations in care and improving patient outcomes.
Connolly explained, “Clinical variations and poor adherence to standard treatments negatively impact patient outcomes while contributing to inefficiencies in downstream healthcare systems. Poor patient outcomes, in turn, affect hospitals’ reputation, revenue, and other factors. In an environment where challenges such as lack of system interoperability persist, the shift from fee-for-service to value-based care is driving the medical IT sector toward advancements in analytics and clinical optimization.”
