Nanjing Medical University, located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, is a medical university co-built by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the National Health Commission, and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. It is an A-class university under the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan, a "Double First-Class" construction university at the national level, and a university under the Ministry of Education’s plan for building high-level schools of public health. It is also one of the first Chinese university bases for medical humanities education, and a base for the Fundamental Discipline Top Student Training Program 2.0. The university has received numerous honors, including being named an advanced collective as a key laboratory support unit, a national pilot unit for professional comprehensive reform, and a pilot institution under the "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program."

Nanjing Medical University was founded in 1934, originally named Jiangsu Provincial Medical and Political College. During the Anti-Japanese War, it was renamed National Jiangsu Medical College. In 1957, it moved from Zhenjiang to Nanjing and was renamed Nanjing Medical College. In 1962, it was listed as one of the first six-year medical colleges in China. In 1981, it was approved as one of the first institutions in China to confer doctoral and master's degrees. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing Medical University. In February 2022, the university entered the list of national "Double First-Class" construction universities, with its Public Health and Preventive Medicine discipline selected for the list of first-class discipline construction. As of January 2025, the university has three campuses: Jiangning Campus, Wutai Campus, and Changzhou Campus (in preparation); Wutai Campus covers an area of 120 mu, housing 19 schools and offering 25 undergraduate majors; it has seven primary-level doctoral degree authorization points, 54 secondary-level doctoral degree authorization points, six interdisciplinary doctoral degree authorization points, and six professional doctoral degree authorization points; ten primary-level master’s degree authorization points and 65 secondary-level master’s degree authorization points; six postdoctoral research stations. The main campus has over 2,000 faculty and staff members, with a total student population of nearly 22,000; there are seven academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (including workstation members), one foreign academician of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and two academic committee members of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; fourteen disciplines rank in the top 1% globally in ESI.

As of June 2024, the school has established over 50 national and provincial-level key laboratories (engineering research centers, innovation centers), including the National Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, the International Joint Research Center for Environment and Human Health, and the Provincial-Ministry Joint Collaborative Innovation Center for Personalized Medicine of Tumors. It also possesses a top-tier medical simulation education center in China and the Jiangsu Provincial Medicine Animal Experimentation Base, as well as the only provincial health policy think tank in the province—the Jiangsu Health Research Institute. The school actively addresses major national needs in the life and health sector by forming significant scientific and technological innovation teams, such as the Basic Science Center and innovative research groups.
