VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that Swiss medical data analytics company Sophia Genetics announced the completion of a $77 million Series E financing round on January 4, U.S. local time. The round was led by Generation Investment Management, with participation from Idinvest Partners, a leading European private equity firm. Existing investors Balderton Capital and Alychlo also joined this financing round.

Sophia Genetics is a genetic data analytics company founded in Switzerland in 2011. Currently headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, it also maintains a branch in Boston, United States. The company combines expertise in life sciences and medicine with advanced computational mathematics to analyze patient DNA using artificial intelligence. By identifying the genetic mutations underlying cancer and other rare diseases, and integrating these findings with expert medical opinions, Sophia Genetics generates diagnostic results that enable personalized treatment plans for patients. Furthermore, it facilitates knowledge sharing through its universal platform, thereby democratizing data-driven medicine.

Today, Sophia Genetics’ universal platform, SOPHiA AI, is used by more than 850 hospitals in 77 countries and has provided diagnostic results for over 300,000 patients. On the SOPHiA AI platform, healthcare professionals can leverage advanced digital analytics to interpret complex genomic and radiological data, thereby improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with oncological and genetic disorders.

Sophia Genetics’ achievements and innovative approach have been recognized by multiple institutions. In 2017, the company was named one of MIT’s “50 Smartest Companies of 2017”; in 2018, it was listed by Fast Company as one of the “Most Innovative Companies of 2018.”

It is reported that Sophia Genetics has completed five rounds of financing since 2013. In December 2013, Sophia Genetics raised CHF 3.8 million in its Series A round, with the investors undisclosed. In July 2014, the company secured $13.8 million in Series B financing, led by Invoke Capital Partners and joined by two other unnamed investors. In December 2015, Sophia Genetics raised $15 million in its Series C round, funded by Marc Coucke. In September 2017, the company closed its Series D round, raising $30 million from four investors led by Balderton Capital.

With the completion of its latest funding round, Sophia Genetics has raised a total of nearly $140 million. The newly secured funds will support the company’s further development of community hospitals globally. Meanwhile, Sophia Genetics will continue to recruit talent to strengthen its capacity for rapid business expansion in the United States.

“Generation is delighted to partner with Sophia Genetics. We believe that leveraging gene sequencing and advanced digital analytics will help healthcare systems become more sustainable. Sophia Genetics is a leader in the revolution of preventive and personalized medicine, and its targeted therapies have significantly improved patient health outcomes,” said Lilly Wollman, Co-Head of Generation’s Growth Equity team. “We admire Sophia Genetics not only for its superior analytical capabilities in genomic and radiological data but also for its outstanding team and corporate culture.”

Dr. Jurgi Camblong, CEO and Founder of SOPHiA GENETICS, stated, “Since our inception, our goal has been to help make healthcare systems around the world more sustainable. By empowering clinical researchers to fully leverage their expertise and bringing them together within a single networked community (the healthcare platform), we enable patients worldwide to receive better care. Generation shares SOPHiA GENETICS’ vision, and with its support, we will accelerate the adoption of data-driven medicine in healthcare, benefiting patients across the globe.”
