In real life, many people face the problem of insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality, and getting a good night's sleep has become a common desire.

At previous CES exhibitions, numerous companies showcased emerging tech products designed to aid sleep, such as the Ostrich Pillow Light, Somnox pillow, Nokia Sleep, Qoobo, and SNOO Smart Sleeper.

At the 2019 CES, French startup UrgoTech unveiled Urgonight, a smart sleep headband designed to help people achieve better sleep through electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and app-based brain training. As a result, Urgonight was honored with an Innovation Award in the Wearable Technology category at CES 2019.

UrgoTech, established in 2015, is a startup medical technology company under the URGO Group. The URGO Group, a leading international medical group based in France, was founded in 1880 as a family-owned enterprise dedicated to the research and development of advanced wound care and self-care technologies. UrgoTech, part of this medical group, focuses on designing, developing, and marketing innovative medical technology products in the fields of health-oriented biofeedback and neurotechnology.

UrgoTech believes that neuroscience will help people find effective ways to address many diseases for which there are currently no effective or accessible treatments. However, the current challenge facing neuroscience is “how to interpret the functions of the human brain” in order to better treat conditions affecting the brain.

Due to the many irrational aspects of modern lifestyles, brain disorders are affecting an increasing number of people. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new therapeutic approaches or products. Neurofeedback is a clinically proven method for training brain activity and improving brain function. At this exhibition, UrgoTech showcased its smart sleep headband, Urgonight, which was developed based on this principle.

Urgonight features an embedded electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor. When worn on the user’s head, this headband measures brain activity. The companion smartphone app receives signals from the headband to visualize brainwaves and create customized brain-training activities, helping users learn how to generate brainwaves that enhance their natural sleep.

UrgoTech stated that use of the product increased users’ sleep onset speed by 40% and reduced nighttime awakenings by 53%. However, the company also noted that users must consistently wear the device for three months to achieve significant effects.

It is reported that UrgoNight is scheduled to hit the market later this year, with a retail price of $600. Pre-orders for the product will open this spring, with delivery expected by the end of the year.
