Recently, VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned that biotechnology company First Light Diagnostics announced the completion of an $8.25 million Series A+ financing round to support the research and development of rapid diagnostic technology for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

In this financing round, investors included prominent firms such as Think.Health, 10x Group, and Beacon Angels, as well as existing shareholders LRV Health and Life Science Angels.

First Light Diagnostics is an automated products company at the forefront of the biotechnology industry. According to founder Don Straus, the product leverages the company’s proprietary MultiPath detection technology to rapidly and sensitively detect bacterial infections in vivo, thereby helping to curb the spread of antibiotic resistance.

MultiPath technology was initially applied to the rapid detection of pathogens—including bacteria, fungi, viruses, toxins, and biomarkers—in complex sample matrices, as well as to determine antimicrobial susceptibility. This high-performance, high-sensitivity detection method makes it an ideal tool for identifying infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, thereby establishing a robust platform for the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

First Light Diagnostics integrates key elements required for rapid testing—speed, cost-effectiveness, and operational feasibility—leveraging commercially available laboratories with state-of-the-art clinical performance to detect human infections, identify pathogens, and effectively guide targeted antibiotic therapy. The introduction of this product will significantly improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and help mitigate the misuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics in hospitals.

David Macdonald, CEO of First Light Diagnostics, stated, “We have reached a historic turning point in the company’s history. The infusion of new capital and the participation of numerous investment groups will provide us with greater policy and financial support, enabling our team to focus more intently on research and development.”

Florian Kainzinger, founder of Think.Health, also stated, “We are delighted to participate in the next phase of research and development at First Light Diagnostics. We hope that our collaboration will help address the challenges of hospital-acquired infections and antibiotic resistance.”

Next, First Light Diagnostics plans to further refine this testing method and commercialize it, with the product expected to launch in early 2020.
