VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that on January 17, 2019, biotechnology company Windgap Medical raised $12 million from 106 investors. As part of the company’s $27 million financing round, these funds will be used to develop an epinephrine auto-injector for the treatment of severe allergic emergencies.

Windgap Medical is a biotechnology company that manufactures medical devices, based in Massachusetts, USA. Since its establishment in 2011, Windgap Medical has secured seven rounds of financing. Notably, the company raised $613 million in seed funding from Maine Angels in 2014. Currently, Windgap Medical generates annual revenue of approximately $15 million.

Traditional epinephrine auto-injectors are bulky, difficult to carry, and have strict temperature storage requirements. In contrast, the epinephrine auto-injector being developed by Windgap Medical remains fully functional under extreme temperature conditions and is portable enough to fit easily into a user’s pocket. Brent Buchine, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of Windgap Medical, describes this product as the “next-generation epinephrine injector.”

It is understood that approximately 43 million people in the United States suffer from symptoms of severe allergic emergencies. However, in recent years, many companies developing epinephrine auto-injectors have faced shortages of epinephrine, leading to a significant surge in its price. The product developed by Windgap Medical can effectively alleviate the epinephrine shortage and is highly likely to be enthusiastically embraced by consumers.

Notably, on the same day, Sandoz, a subsidiary of Novartis, launched Symjepi, a pre-filled epinephrine syringe, in the United States. Reportedly, this product serves as an alternative to epinephrine auto-injectors, featuring a compact size, lower cost, and user-friendly design. Currently, Sandoz has not disclosed the selling price of this product.
