Recently, VCBeat (WeChat official account: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that OtoNexus, a medical technology company based in Washington, U.S., has announced the completion of a $4.4 million financing round. Previously, OtoNexus had raised $7.8 million. With this latest addition, the company’s total funding amounts to $8.3 million. Reportedly, OtoNexus will use these funds to continue developing its ultrasound-based medical device technology for improved diagnosis of middle ear infections.
OtoNexus, a medical technology company based in Washington State, USA, was founded in 2010. The company has invented a revolutionary new device that leverages air-coupled ultrasound technology to provide physicians with the data needed to rapidly and accurately assess symptoms of middle ear infections, particularly aiding them in determining when to prescribe antibiotics for patients.

The OtoNexus ultrasound device, invented by OtoNexus founders George A. Gates and Dr. Mark A. Moehering, will enable practitioners to enhance the quality of patient care and significantly improve diagnostic accuracy. According to OtoNexus executives, the device can reduce healthcare system costs by curbing antibiotic overuse, preventing unnecessary specialist referrals, improving the quality of necessary referrals, and avoiding surgeries through earlier and more accurate diagnoses. In addition to improving patient outcomes by enhancing diagnostic precision, the OtoNexus device is poised to have a substantial impact on lowering healthcare costs for this highly prevalent and debilitating medical condition.
It is reported that in the United States, 93% of children suffer from at least one episode of severe otitis media, and most children experience more than ten recurrent episodes during childhood. These experiences are distressing for children, parents, and caregivers. However, current diagnostic methods are inaccurate and ineffective. Clinical studies have shown that the misdiagnosis rate for otitis media reaches 50%, particularly in making the critical distinction regarding whether to prescribe antibiotics. As a result, patients often receive inappropriate treatment.
Dr. John Germiller of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia stated, “George A. Gates’ work in developing this new technology will have a significant impact on the diagnosis and management of otitis media.” Meanwhile, Dr. Charles Bluestone from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine remarked, “There is an urgent need for the type of device being developed by OtoNexus.” Dr. Richard Rosenfeld of the SUNY Downstate Medical Center noted, “If a device can improve the diagnostic accuracy of otitis media with effusion, it would greatly benefit children.”
Since its establishment in 2010, OtoNexus has received numerous honors and awards. In 2016, OtoNexus was selected as a FiReStarter company by Future in Review (FiRe). Being named a FiReStarter company is considered a prestigious honor, positioning OtoNexus among an elite group of companies. That same year, at the Angel Capital Association (ACA) Annual Summit held in Philadelphia, OtoNexus was chosen as the champion of the Innovation Showcase, which was part of the ACA’s innovation demonstration program.
