VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that Kaia Health, a digital therapeutics company based in New York, USA, has announced the completion of a $10 million Series A financing round led by Balderton Capital. The purpose of this funding is to promote Kaia Health’s smartphone application for home-based management of chronic diseases, thereby further expanding its presence in the U.S. market. As part of this plan, the company will open a new office in New York City and allocate additional funds to support clinical research on its products.
Kaia Health is a healthcare company dedicated to the development of software applications. The company offers an app-based digital therapeutic solution focused on chronic pain, transforming the most effective offline therapies into digital interventions and integrating them with technologies that enhance treatment outcomes.
Kaia Health leverages artificial intelligence to create home-based, clinically validated exercise programs for users. The company has developed a range of products for daily exercises and management of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) symptoms, with its most iconic offering being Kaia, an app designed to treat back pain. This application aims to help individuals manage back pain through home-based exercises, utilizing smartphone motion-tracking technology to provide real-time feedback on various daily workouts along with muscle relaxation techniques.
Statistics show that 100 million people in the United States suffer from chronic back pain annually, making it the leading cause of analgesic use. Meanwhile, approximately 30% of general practitioner appointments in the United Kingdom are related to musculoskeletal pain. Kaia Health positions its back pain application as an alternative to increased analgesic consumption.
In addition, Kaia Health has developed an application for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—Kaia COPD. The Kaia COPD app integrates physical therapy, psychological therapy, and patient education techniques. It enables patients to undergo comfortable pulmonary rehabilitation at home and helps alleviate COPD symptoms through cardiovascular and muscular exercises.
Patients can also connect with coaches through the Kaia COPD app to access data on their breathing and coughing frequency, as well as information on nutrition and medication tracking. Although the app is currently available only in German, the company plans to translate it into English and other languages.
Konstantin Mehl, Co-founder and CEO of Kaia Health, stated: “Over the past year, we have identified a widespread, unmet need for affordable and accessible digital therapeutics. A prime example is our globally first computer vision-based application for back pain. This app has improved patients’ access to care and reduced costs for healthcare payers worldwide.”
Kaia app users say, “No other health app is as fun as Kaia! It features a highly unique setup, backed by in-depth medical research and rich educational content.”
