On January 31, Jianke, a leading domestic “Internet +” pharmaceutical and healthcare service platform, and Pfizer held a signing ceremony and press conference in Beijing under the theme “Strategic Cooperation on Online Family Doctors: Making Chronic Diseases Easy to Manage in China.”

In addition to launching the online family doctor project, both parties will collaborate in areas such as internet hospitals, online pharmacies, drug accessibility, chronic disease management, patient education, physician education, grassroots healthcare initiatives benefiting the public, and medical big data. Together, they will explore innovative, integrated models for pharmaceutical and healthcare services, enabling a growing number of patients to benefit from the robust development of “Internet + Healthcare.”

Internet Healthcare Policies Take Effect: Jianke and Pfizer Explore Chronic Disease Management

The “Medium- and Long-Term Plan for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases in China (2017–2025)” points out that chronic diseases are a category of illnesses that seriously threaten the health of Chinese residents and have become a major public health issue affecting the country’s economic and social development. According to data from the “Report on Cardiovascular Diseases in China 2017,” deaths from cardiovascular diseases account for more than 40% of all disease-related deaths among residents, ranking as the leading cause of death among both urban and rural populations. However, the annual rate of blood lipid testing among residents aged 35 years and older is only 19.4%.

In response to the crisis of chronic diseases in China, the state has formulated prevention and control strategies by promoting the innovative integration of the Internet with the health industry, actively exploring new models for chronic disease health management services. By fully leveraging information technology to enrich chronic disease prevention and treatment methods and work content, we are advancing the application of online services such as appointment-based diagnosis and treatment, online follow-up, disease management, and health management, thereby providing high-quality and convenient medical and health services.

In September 2018, the National Health Commission issued three documents related to internet-based diagnosis and treatment: the “Administrative Measures for Internet Diagnosis and Treatment (Trial),” the “Administrative Measures for Internet Hospitals (Trial),” and the “Management Specifications for Telemedicine Services (Trial).” These documents clarified the definition and service boundaries of internet-based diagnosis and treatment activities, specified the access procedures and the responsibilities of relevant parties, and established a framework for supervision and administration.

To this end, Jianke and Pfizer have actively responded to national policies by joining forces to explore innovative chronic disease management models. This collaboration aims to achieve complementary advantages and multi-party win-win outcomes, thereby contributing to the realization of the national goal of “significantly improving the environment for chronic disease prevention and control and reducing premature mortality due to chronic diseases by 2020.”

Expanded Scope of Collaborative Disease Areas; Implementation of the Online Family Doctor Service Model

The focus of chronic disease treatment lies in the long-term management of the condition. Through this collaboration, both parties will leverage their respective strengths to implement chronic disease management under an online family doctor service model. By fully capitalizing on patient healthcare encounters, they will establish and update medical records, conduct health education and online follow-ups for chronic diseases, and actively promote healthy lifestyles and chronic disease interventions. These efforts aim to significantly enhance the quality of chronic disease management programs, enabling patients to gradually benefit from the advantages of internet-based healthcare. In addition, Jianke and Pfizer will explore pilot collaborations across multiple therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular diseases, mental health and neurological disorders, men’s health, women’s health, and pain management.

Xie Fangmin, CEO of Jianke, stated, “In this strategic plan, Jianke will fully leverage its advantages in mobile healthcare and its proud chronic disease management center system. Combined with Pfizer’s high-quality physician resources and extensive expertise in chronic disease management, we aim to enable more patients to benefit from the booming development of ‘Internet Plus Healthcare.’” He emphasized, “The shift from a disease-oriented to a health-oriented paradigm will be the next focal point for the internet healthcare industry, requiring companies to explore mature and diversified business models. We look forward to working hand in hand with our partners to deepen our roots in internet healthcare and jointly create a new smart online family doctor healthcare platform.”

Wu Feng, General Manager of Pfizer Upjohn in China, stated, “As a pharmaceutical company with a 30-year presence in China, Pfizer has always been committed to its mission of ‘Partnering for a Healthy China.’ We actively respond to the national strategy of strengthening primary healthcare and ensuring basic coverage, striving to ensure that every patient has equitable access to high-quality medical services and medicines.”

“Pfizer possesses extensive disease management expertise and a robust product portfolio in the field of chronic diseases. Through this strategic partnership, we aim to leverage Jianke’s advanced internet technologies to jointly enhance medication accessibility, expand the boundaries of doctor-patient engagement scenarios, disseminate cutting-edge medical knowledge and academic advancements to more physicians, and serve a broader patient population—particularly those with chronic conditions—so that no chronic disease in China is difficult to manage.”
