VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) has learned that MAP Health Management, a telemedicine company, recently completed a $25 million Series A financing round, with Aetna as the lead investor. MAP Health Management stated that the funds will be used to expand its business operations, which are dedicated to preventing the worsening of substance abuse.

According to surveys, approximately 20 million adults in the United States currently misuse drugs, with many facing long-term barriers to overcoming addiction.

MAP Health Management was founded in 2011 with the mission of helping individuals gradually gain control over substance use disorders through telehealth technologies, facilitating their transition into recovery. It also assists patients in reconnecting with society as they work to repair interpersonal relationships, reintegrate into their communities, and return to work or school. MAP employs 125 staff members, the majority of whom are professionally trained counselors. Their responsibilities include guiding patients through medical care, providing medical counseling to patients and their families, and addressing behavioral health issues associated with substance use disorders.

Jacob Levenson, Founder and CEO of MAP Health Management, stated, “While a fundamental treatment for chronic drug addiction already exists worldwide, MAP was established to provide patients with uninterrupted support after discharge, aiming to achieve a complete cure.”

Over the past two years, MAP Health Management has deepened its partnerships with health plans, extending product coverage to 40 million patients and leveraging its network support system to reduce emergency hospitalization rates by 57%. Through continuous development, MAP has expanded its influence in the field of substance use disorder treatment, driving health plans to grow this area into a rapidly expanding business line.

Among health plans, Aetna was the first health plan partner to provide coverage benefits to MAP Health Management. Due to the short payback period of this program and Aetna’s growing interest in the behavioral health sector, it decided to join MAP as an investor. Aetna has made four investments, with its most recent occurring in August 2017, when it invested $36.6 million in AbleTo. Prior to November 2014, Aetna acquired 13 companies, including Bswift and InterGlobal. In December 2017, Aetna was acquired by CVS Health for $69 billion.

Levenson stated that they aim to leverage MAP’s funding to deliver their services in states heavily affected by the opioid crisis, such as Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. He estimated that by the end of this year, MAP would be operating in 29 states, more than doubling its geographic footprint, and enhancing facilities across post-acute care settings, urgent care centers, primary care clinics, and pharmacies.

“These gains will drive sales, enabling us to expand our services beyond substance use disorder treatment. Currently, we are working with many patients who have already received acute care, and their conditions are recovering more rapidly. We aim to explore what can be achieved by engaging patients earlier and how this might alter treatment outcomes. After all, early intervention is the primary factor in recovery.”
