VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that Eptifibatide, a cardiovascular ready-to-use premixed medication developed by the multinational medical supplies company Baxter, has recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to Baxter, this is the first and only premixed eptifibatide product presented in a flexible container, designed to help pharmacists improve efficiency and enhance patient safety. The drug has currently entered the U.S. market.
Eptifibatide is a platelet aggregation inhibitor that prevents platelet adhesion and clotting. This drug is indicated for the medical management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), including emergencies such as myocardial infarction and other conditions involving sudden cessation of cardiac blood supply. Additionally, this drug can be used in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). According to survey data from GBI Research, the value of the U.S. cardiovascular disease market is projected to reach $146.4 billion by 2022.
Baxter is a diversified multinational medical supplies company focused on the research, development, manufacturing, and sales of products for treating hemophilia, immune system disorders, infectious diseases, renal conditions, trauma, and other chronic and critical illnesses. Robert Felicelli, President of Baxter, stated, “Pharmacists are the unsung heroes of hospitals, dedicated to ensuring that every medication is delivered to patients promptly and accurately. By adding more premixed medications—such as Eptifibatide—to Baxter’s extensive product portfolio, we can help pharmacists enhance efficiency, reduce medication waste, and improve patient safety.”
Like other Baxter premixed medications, Eptifibatide also utilizes Baxter’s proprietary GALAXY container technology. GALAXY is a non-PVC and non-DEHP system that enables premixed medications to have a longer shelf life under room temperature storage conditions.
It is reported that premixed medications are pharmaceutical preparations produced by uniformly mixing one or more active pharmaceutical ingredients with diluents or carriers in specified proportions. The use of premixed medications can streamline the preparation process, and employing standard-dose premixes enables pharmacists to improve operational efficiency. Furthermore, premixed medications help prevent compounding errors during drug preparation, thereby enhancing patient safety.
