BOE is an IoT company that provides smart port products and professional services for information interaction and human health. Building on its expertise in display and sensing technologies, the company has established three core business segments: Port Devices, Smart IoT, and Smart Health Engineering.

So, how has BOE performed in the smart medical engineering sector? What achievements has it made? How is it viewed by the industry? What are the distinctive features of the digital tertiary general hospital recently launched in Hefei?

BOE and Hefei: A Long-Standing Partnership with Total Investment Exceeding RMB 100 Billion

Hefei BOE Hospital is located in the Xinzhan District of Hefei, adjacent to Shaoquan Lake, in the northeastern part of the city, where medical resources are relatively scarce.

BOE CEO Chen Yanshun told reporters,The decision to establish a digital hospital in Hefei this time is because JingDongfang has long been connected with Hefei.. From the construction of China’s first G6 high-generation line a decade ago to the lighting-up and production launch of the world’s first G10.5 line, the highest generation line, last year, Hefei has become a strategic hub for BOE’s layout in the semiconductor display industry and its innovative transformation and development.

“Therefore, on this basis, we will establish our first life sciences industrial park, centered around the digital hospital, in Hefei to deepen regional cooperation and expand our industrial footprint. With the full commencement of operations at Hefei BOE Hospital, we will continue to pursue coordinated development with Hefei to achieve co-creation and mutual success,” said Chen Yanshun.

Ling Yun, Mayor of Hefei, stated that since BOE settled in Hefei in 2008, it has invested in and constructed three LCD panel production lines, one OGS touch technology production line, one smart manufacturing factory, and one digital tertiary general hospital over the past 11 years. With a total investment exceeding RMB 100 billion and more than 30,000 jobs created, BOE has made significant contributions to Hefei’s economic development and healthcare sector.

Hefei BOE Hospital is a key digital tertiary general hospital established under Hefei’s 13th Five-Year Plan for the layout of medical institutions. With its serene environment, comprehensive departments, cutting-edge equipment, and distinguished talent pool, the full commencement of clinical services at Hefei BOE Hospital marks a solid step by BOE Technology Group into the healthcare industry and will undoubtedly usher in a brilliant future for BOE’s health services endeavors.

Tao Yisheng, Director of the Anhui Provincial Health Commission, stated, “Visiting here today, I have seen a modern general hospital that is internationalized, group-operated, and smart. The establishment of such a hospital in Anhui Province is a significant milestone for our province’s health and medical industry, injecting new vitality and energy into our healthcare sector. Leveraging its superior environment, cutting-edge equipment, high-level digitalization, and an elite team of medical professionals, the hospital is poised to provide novel management insights for the development of hospitals within Anhui Province. It will have a positive and far-reaching impact on advancing the modernization of our provincial hospitals and deliver high-quality, diversified medical services to the people of Anhui and surrounding regions.”

Director Tao Yisheng stated that the full commencement of clinical services at Hefei BOE Hospital marks a new historical starting point. We aim to become leaders in the integration of medicine and engineering, pioneers of novel service models, and exemplars of respect for life. By actively implementing our corporate spirit of serving the people and society, we are committed to contributing to public health and well-being, supporting the innovative development of Hefei City and the Xinzhan High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and ushering in a new era of smart healthcare through technology.

What Does a Tertiary General Digital Hospital, Built Over Three Years, Look Like?

In fact, construction of Hefei BOE Hospital commenced in September 2016,Focus on building eight leading disciplines with international cutting-edge standards: cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, oncology, obstetrics and pediatrics, traditional Chinese medicine, reproductive medicine, and health management.

Notably, by fully leveraging BOE’s cultural DNA of “Teamwork, Speed, and Quality,” the project completed the construction of a 1,000-bed, Grade III general hospital with a gross floor area of 193,000 square meters in just 27 months, setting an industry record for speed.

According to Chen Yanshun,By fully leveraging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), Hefei BOE Hospital continues to innovate its operational model. Within the outpatient area, each department is equipped with an integrated consultation zone, enabling patients to complete registration, payment, vital signs measurement, consultation, blood sampling for laboratory tests, report collection, and medication pickup in a one-stop process.

Meanwhile, Hefei BOE Hospital has been designated as a provider for provincial and municipal employee basic medical insurance, urban resident basic medical insurance, the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme, and commercial medical insurance. Patients holding medical insurance cards can make direct payments via card swipe, enabling immediate insurance settlement and delivering a more convenient healthcare experience.

In terms of medical resources, Hefei BOE Hospital has assembled experts from both domestic and international backgrounds, with some hailing from prestigious institutions such as Yale School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and the Chinese PLA General Hospital. Additionally, Hefei BOE Hospital has established a digital diagnostics platform and forged in-depth collaborations with international healthcare organizations, including Dignity Health.

Through international remote consultations, patients can access high-quality overseas medical resources without traveling abroad. Meanwhile, Hefei BOE Hospital shares its premium resources with community hospitals, enabling community patients to have “face-to-face” remote consultations with specialists.

In addition, Hefei BOE Hospital has partnered with the Anhui Red Cross Foundation to establish a special fund, providing more patients with precise, convenient, efficient, and professional diagnostic services.

Smart Medical Engineering is BOE’s strategic initiative for the future, dedicated to advancing human health and well-being.

“Hefei BOE Hospital is a key initiative in implementing the core philosophy and development strategy of the smart medical-engineering enterprise.”Chen Yanshun told reporters, “Through in-depth collaboration with Dignity Health, one of the leading healthcare groups in the United States, we have taken the lead in introducing new concepts and models. While adhering to the standards for tertiary hospitals and JCI accreditation, we have integrated the Internet of Things (IoT), digital technologies, and innovative healthcare service models into our planning and construction. This has enabled us to build an intelligent diagnosis and treatment service system that combines online and offline capabilities, effectively establishing a digital hospital characterized by technological leadership, digital drive, and model innovation.”

Smart medical engineering is JD’s strategic choice for the future, rooted in human health and well-being. “We integrate technology and medicine through innovation, adopting a people-centric approach focused on two key scenarios—home and hospital. By leveraging artificial intelligence and big data platforms, we consolidate diagnostic equipment, sensors, and medical imaging technologies to build five major business platforms: mobile health, digital hospitals, digital human bodies, regenerative medicine, and health parks,” said Chen Yanshun with confidence.

To fully leverage the synergistic capabilities across its business units, BOE has initiated the nationwide deployment of life science industrial bases. The company plans to establish ten life science parks within five years, each integrating medical care, education, research, production, and application functions, thereby forming a smart medical-engineering ecosystem covering China and contributing to the improvement of people's quality of life and healthspan.

As an IoT enterprise providing smart port products and professional services for information interaction and human health, BOE has seen initial success in its health services sector. Its multiple digital hospitals in cities such as Beijing, Hefei, and Chengdu have gradually commenced clinical operations.

On the BOE Mobile Health Management Service Platform it has developed, individuals can obtain their health data at home using home testing devices and promptly receive professional medical advice and services from AI doctors or physicians via the digital hospital platform, enabling comprehensive, full-lifecycle health service management.
