VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that on March 28, at the “Symposium on Construction and Application Technologies of Medical Knowledge Graphs,” jointly organized by the Institute of Medical Information of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Ping An Healthcare Technology, Ping An Smart City’s Smart Healthcare division officially launched its Chinese Medical Knowledge Graph. This graph integrates millions of medical concepts, tens of millions of medical relationships, and tens of millions of pieces of medical evidence, covering core medical concepts and achieving comprehensive aggregation of knowledge data within the healthcare ecosystem. As a cornerstone of artificial intelligence, medical knowledge graphs transform unstructured or semi-structured knowledge into a structured graph format, enabling machines to understand and leverage this knowledge for intelligent decision-making.

This medical knowledge graph was spearheaded by Ping An Smart City · Smart Healthcare and jointly constructed by Ping An Healthcare Technology and the Institute of Medical Information. It is currently widely applied across Ping An Group’s healthcare ecosystem products.

Xie Guotong, Chief Medical Scientist of Ping An Group, along with relevant experts from institutions such as Tsinghua University, the Institute of Medical Information, the Health Development Research Center of the National Health Commission, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Fuwai Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the National Cancer Center, the Chinese PLA General Hospital, and Harbin Institute of Technology, attended the seminar and shared their insights.

Dr. Li Jiao from the Institute of Medical Information introduced that Ping An has numerous scenarios for the practical application of medical informatics technologies in the healthcare sector. This collaboration fully leverages Ping An’s extensive application scenarios in the medical field, as well as the Institute’s technical expertise in constructing medical knowledge graphs, thereby effectively enhancing the interpretability, evidence-based reliability, and resource credibility of medical knowledge graphs in artificial intelligence applications.

Ping An Smart Healthcare, backed by the leading technological capabilities of Ping An Healthcare Technology, collaborates extensively with governments, medical institutions, enterprises, and research universities to build end-to-end solutions covering the entire patient journey—pre-diagnosis, during diagnosis, and post-diagnosis—targeting various aspects of healthcare management and clinical practice. Dr. Ni Yuan, Head of Medical Text Processing at Ping An Healthcare Technology, stated that the collaboration with the Institute of Medical Information focuses on constructing medical knowledge graphs and ensuring data quality control. This effort is based on Ping An’s five major medical knowledge bases: a drug database, disease database, prescription/treatment database, health factor database, and physician/medical institution database. This foundation ensures high construction efficiency, large-scale graph data, broad data coverage, and high-quality knowledge graph data.

Currently, Ping An has developed multiple application scenarios for intelligent services based on this medical knowledge graph. For instance, Ping An Smart Healthcare’s intelligent clinical decision support system, built upon the medical knowledge graph, provides physicians with diagnostic and treatment recommendations. This system has already been deployed in nearly 100 healthcare institutions, covering more than 60 cities across 17 provinces, including Heilongjiang, Gansu, Hunan, and Hebei. Additionally, Ping An Smart Healthcare’s intelligent chronic disease management solution, also leveraging the medical knowledge graph, offers patients pre-consultation triage and guidance, as well as post-consultation intelligent follow-up, education, and Q&A services. This system has been implemented province-wide in five provinces/municipalities, including Chongqing and Jiangsu, and city-wide in four municipalities, including Nanchang (Jiangxi) and Qingdao (Shandong).

Going forward, both parties will continue to upgrade the medical knowledge graph and expand knowledge graph–based applications, thereby solidifying the foundation for Ping An Smart Healthcare to deliver high-quality intelligent healthcare services to medical institutions, health authorities, and other entities across provinces and cities. This effort will support the sustained and healthy development of smart healthcare services and help extend premium medical resources more broadly to grassroots healthcare professionals and patients.
