Data-Driven Women's Health Company

A Venture Capital Fund

An Investment Firm
VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on April 1, female reproductive health company NextGen Jane announced the completion of a $9 million Series A financing round. This round of financing will help NextGen Jane convert its prototype products into test products and advance the company's further research in the field of female reproductive health.
It is reported that this round of financing was led by Material Impact, with participation from Access Industries, Viking Global Investors, Liminal Ventures, and several prominent angel investors.
NextGen Jane, founded in 2014, is a data-driven women’s health startup headquartered in Oakland, California, USA. The company is developing a smart tampon that enables users to collect exfoliated cells from the reproductive tract via the tampon and mail them back to NextGen Jane for genomic testing. Leveraging this genomic data, NextGen Jane can assess patients’ reproductive health metrics and facilitate early diagnosis of disruptive reproductive health disorders.
Women typically experience endometrial shedding (menstruation) once a month, and the shed cells serve as natural biopsy material. “Menstrual flow can act as a natural biopsy component of the female reproductive tract, allowing the collected cellular tissue to be used for disease diagnosis,” said Ridhi Tariyal, founder and CEO of NextGen Jane.
NextGen Jane is currently collecting various molecular signals from cells in menstrual fluid and gathering a large volume of female reproductive health samples, with the aim of developing a comprehensive proprietary internal database. This will enable the identification of potential diseases simply by analyzing biomarkers found in used tampons. Furthermore, in compliance with HIPAA regulations, the company ensures the anonymity of all data and strictly prohibits the sale of such data without explicit consent from the individuals concerned.
Adam Sharkawy, founder of Material Impact, stated: “The women’s health market continues to expand, currently reaching $36.2 billion. However, most women lack access to the medical care they need; even in the United States, half of healthcare facilities lack specialized gynecology services. NextGen Jane’s disruptive technology platform can replace complex, invasive diagnostic procedures, empowering women worldwide to proactively and actively manage their health.”
Katie Adams, head of the MARCOM Institute, stated, “NextGen Jane is a game-changer, providing women in underserved areas with a way to undergo diagnostic testing without visiting a clinic.”
Founder Ridhi Tariyal emphasized, “By decoupling sample collection from clinical settings, we can help many underserved populations. For us, addressing the urgent resource crisis in medicine through reasonable pricing enables truly personalized preventive care.”
VCBeat learned from foreign media that the angel investors participating in this investment round include Rox Anderson, George Church, Kacey Fitzpatrick, Frances Frei, Deborah Kilpatrick, Angela MacFarlane, Anne Morriss, Steve Quake, David Walt, and Dr. George Whitesides.
