Small Molecule Drug Developer

Venture Capital Firm
VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) recently learned that Swedish biopharmaceutical company Gesynta Pharma has completed a €6 million seed financing round, with investment from Industrifonden, a well-established venture capital firm founded in 1979. The funds will be used to support Phase II clinical trials of the company’s lead drug candidate, GS-248. The trial is scheduled to take place in 2020. As part of the agreement, Bita Sehat, an investment manager at Industrifonden, will join the board of directors of Gesynta Pharma.
Gesynta Pharma was founded in 2017. Its founder and CEO, Dr. Patric Stenberg, previously worked at Pfizer and brings 20 years of experience in pharmaceutical and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) research and development.
mPGES-1 (microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1) is an inducible enzyme downstream of cyclooxygenase that influences the progression of inflammation in cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular inflammation, often accompanied by vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, is associated with elevated morbidity and mortality rates.

Leveraging research from the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden’s top-ranked medical university, the company has developed an mPGES-1 inhibitor based on arachidonic acid to enhance vasodilation and platelet inhibition, thereby ameliorating vascular inflammation. Its lead drug candidate, GS-248, is poised to enter Phase II clinical trials. GS-248 is an oral small-molecule drug designed for the treatment of microvascular diseases associated with chronic inflammatory conditions.
Notably, Gesynta Pharma has recently acquired a late-stage drug discovery company that holds several patented technologies with significant application value. This acquisition will broaden the company’s research scope to include treatments for a wider range of cardiovascular diseases and cancers.
“Gesynta Pharma has an experienced team, and its newly developed drugs hold significant market potential. We look forward to this collaboration successfully advancing the company’s new drugs to the next stage,” said Jonas Brambeck, Investment Director at Industrifonden.

Beyond financial backing, these investors have provided additional channels of assistance to the company. This reflects their strong conviction in Gesynta Pharma’s therapeutic philosophy and their optimistic outlook on the company’s growth prospects,” said Patric Stenberg, CEO of Gesynta Pharma.
