VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that Tioga Medical recently announced the completion of a $15 million Series A financing round to advance the preclinical development of its novel Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) technology.

This round of financing was led by The Capital Partnership (TCP), with participation from Cormorant Healthcare Fund, AMED Ventures, and Shangbay Capital.

Tioga Medical is a healthcare company headquartered in California, USA, specializing in treatment solutions for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Since its inception, the company has been dedicated to research on mitral valve diseases.

Mitral Valve DiseaseMitral valve disease is a type of valvular heart disease. Valvular heart disease refers to single- or multi-valve lesions involving the mitral, tricuspid, aortic, and pulmonary valves, in which pathological changes—such as those caused by rheumatic fever, myxomatous degeneration, degenerative changes, congenital malformations, ischemic necrosis, infection, or trauma—impair normal blood flow, leading to cardiac dysfunction and ultimately resulting in heart failure.

Mitral valve disease clinically manifests primarily as mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation. Currently, the curative treatments for these conditions are mitral commissurotomy and prosthetic valve replacement. However, both therapeutic approaches are invasive, and elderly patients often miss the optimal window for treatment due to advanced age, frailty, and severe pathology.

The novel transcatheter valve replacement technology developed by Tioga Medical is a minimally invasive valve replacement procedure that delivers a prosthetic heart valve to the aortic valve position via interventional catheter techniques, thereby completing the implantation of the prosthetic valve and restoring valve function. Initially termed Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), the procedure is now more commonly referred to as TAVR, as the implanted valve functionally replaces the original diseased valve.

It is understood that the principle of TAVR is similar to that of previous stent implantation for coronary artery disease. Typically, a 6-mm incision is made in the femoral artery at the groin, and a compressed prosthetic heart valve is delivered along the artery to the site of the diseased aortic valve. The native valve is then displaced toward the periphery via mechanical expansion, thereby replacing the diseased aortic valve. Compared with traditional surgery, TAVR does not require open-chest procedures, carries lower risks, and is associated with lower all-cause mortality and postoperative cerebral thrombosis rates than conventional surgical approaches. Due to its minimally invasive nature and faster postoperative recovery, TAVR is well received by elderly patients. Reportedly, TAVR has become one of the primary treatments for severe aortic stenosis, benefiting nearly 300,000 patients across more than 30 countries worldwide.

Mike Dineen, President and CEO of Tioga Medical, stated, “This round of financing will enable us to build a more specialized R&D team, further optimize TAVR technology, and accelerate the application of transcatheter valve replacement technology in the treatment of mitral and tricuspid valve diseases.”

Casey Gordon, Head of Private Investment at TCP, also stated, “Tioga Medical’s proprietary technology offers an innovative solution for the clinical treatment of cardiovascular disease. Currently, Medtronic’s CoreValve and Edwards’ Sapien are the leaders in the TAVR field, but we believe that Tioga Medical will become a key player in the TAVR valve market in the future.”
